PrepHoopsTN / Above the Rim Gym Fall Combine Recap: Part XX
MURFREESBORO-
A current Stewart’s Creek player and a former Stewart’s Creek player share the spotlight in this Fall Combine recap.
Trevor Chatman (Stewart’s Creek) and J.J. Platt (Webb-Bell Buckle) know each other and that is the end of the connection between the two. Chatman projects as a forward with rebounding prowess.
J.J. Platt’s sparkling performance was as dominant as it was unsurprising. Though he left early for a high school obligation J.J. Platt easily landed on the Fall Combine All-Star Team (top 20 players.
Trevor Chatman 2021 Stewart’s Creek Wing Guard
Sophomore Trevor Chatman is a big-bodied wing or forward. Though he stands 6-foot-0 without shoes, the nearly 6-foot-2 (w/ shoes) guard rebounds better than most.
He gives Stewart’s Creek some rebounding commitment on a team full of fast guards.
His 8.25″ hands (palm to middle fingertip) more often reside on the body of 6-foot-5 guys. What does this mean? Who knows? He might be a large-handed guard or a young man with quite a bit of growing to do.
Chatman’s wingspan is a promising +6 and his standing reach is just over 8′. As a 6-foot-0 guard he has very long arms and surprising bounce of 32″ on the one step vertical leap.
Javonte “J.J.” Platt 2020 Webb-Bell Buckle Point Guard
An incredible athlete, the self-assured J.J. Platt (pictured above) consistently showed off the wiggle at the fall combine.
A starting guard for EAB 16u, Platt put in a wonderful summer and followed it up with one strong fall showing in the middle of college evaluations. Now that Platt is an upperclassman and teamed with the best 2020 in Tennessee college coaches are getting good, long looks at his game.
They are likely to see what the instructors at the fall combine saw…a complete lead guard. Platt can hit the jumper from multiple points on the floor. He can easily get to the basket and jumps higher than his peers when he does.
Defending with grit consistently is an area he can improve. Platt is very strong now, but continuing to add bulk will help him absorb clattering in the paint.
Platt’s sprint was the best. His vertical was top three. His lane agility was top three. The combine is a perfect setting for a player of Platt’s athleticism and physical development. Now he gets to display his talents in-season.
