Prep U Showcase: Recruiting Notebook
Over the weekend we attended the Prep U Showcase in Waukegan. The event featured an array of prospects from all classes, college levels, and we got to know some new players. Today we are going to look at the recruitments the prospects in attendance. This is our Prep U Showcase: Recruiting Notebook!
Eric Cannon (Waubonsie Valley – 2019)
Cannon is a rock solid guard that doesn’t make mistakes and has really improved as a shooter. On the recruiting front he says, “Right now the top school I am probably hearing from is Rochester. Also Augustana. I was talking to University of Chicago for a little bit. Albion and Kenyon College.” Cannon has already visited Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Rochester, and Augustana.
Jonathan Kolev (Conant – 2019)
Skilled wing at 6’5” with toughness and a passing feel. He told us about recruiting, “Right now I am talking to Greenville in Southern Illinois and Dominican which is close to where I live.” On Greenville he said, “I am visiting this Wednesday. I was there once for a camp a few weeks ago. I really like it.” He plans to visit Dominican in the next couple weeks as well.
Drake Montgomery (South Elgin – 2019)
Montgomery was the biggest breakout senior at the event. Attacking guard that got to the rim a ton! On the recruiting front he said, “Mostly D3 schools. D2 Minot State has called me. A lot of D3’s in Central College, North Park, and a lot more.” No visits planned at this time.
Jayden Johnson (Batavia – 2020)
Johnson was the top ranked prospect at the event. The top 10 2020 wing shot lights out and has improved his body tremendously. On the recruiting front he said, “I am really getting close with Drake’s coaching staff. They are awesome coaches. I love those coaches a lot. Colorado State has been in touch with me. Tulsa texts me every day.” Several other schools have been through Batavia this fall to see him. “Northwestern came in, Loyola, Yale, Belmont, and a few more schools.” Currently his only offer is from Southern Illinois.
Jabari Chiphe (Walter Payton – 2020)
Chiphe was outstanding. The top 25 prospect looked like he deserves even more of a bump in our next update with the way he scored from mid-range, passed it, and played above the rim. When it comes to college interest the junior said, “North Dakota expressed interest and wants me to come down for a game. Wisconsin Green Bay came to an open gym. I am going there in early December. Winona State also invited me to attend one of their games this year.”
Luke Scheffers (St. Charles North – 2020)
Scheffers is a high IQ lead guard that lit it up shooting from the perimeter. He told us, “I have heard from William & Mary, Western Illinois, UIC, Wheaton College, Hope, and Wash U.”
Michael Huene (St. Viator – 2020)
This big man at 6’8” was impressive with how he finished around the hoop, ran the floor, and rebounded in his area. When it comes to college he said, “I have heard from a few. The main ones are Belmont and Wash U.”
Cam Doughtery (Naperville Central – 2020)
This Naperville Central forward impressed with his skill level and sneaky athleticism. When it comes to colleges the junior said, “D1 I am hearing from Princeton, Dartmouth, Brown, and Richmond. At the D3 level MIT and University of Chicago.” He has seen a couple schools already. “I have been to Yale and Cornell. I liked Yale a lot. The campus is really nice. Cornell is nice. We are planning to visit more Ivy’s because that is the goal.”
Walt Mattingly (Deerfield – 2021)
Mattingly was the breakout player at the camp. The 6’6” forward showed a versatile inside-outside game with a lot of intriguing long term tools. He just moved to Chicago from Kentucky. He already has got some early college interest after playing with the Cincinnati Royals this summer. IUPUI and Belmont have both shown interest in him.
