Prep Hoops Sweet 16: Top Big Men
The inaugural Prep Hoops Sweet 16 was a success! We had some great teams/players competing, resulting in some very entertaining games. Here are the top big men from the event:
Anthony Garza (Shadow Ridge 2020):
Anthony Garza looked like a grown man! He was bullying his defenders and dunking over the top of anyone who stood in his way. He really impressed me with his great passing ability, especially out of a horns set. He was giving teams trouble in horns sets, either making the correct pass, knocking down a mid-range, or taking it strong to the basket. He looked very impressive!
Carter Hall (Shadow Ridge 2019):
Carter Hall compliments Anthony Garza very nicely. Hall has excellent foot work in the post, allowing him to get some easy looks at the basket. He even has some nice dribble moves, he was able to push the ball quite nicely in transition.
Dischon Thomas (Hillcrest Prep 2019):
Dischon Thomas is super long and even more athletic. He uses these two skill sets to make an immediate impact on defense and is trouble in transition. Every break is a chance for him to dunk on someone. He could benefit from working on his post moves as he is limited to transition and alley-oops offensively.
Kolby Lathrop (Ironwood Ridge 2020):
Kolby Lathrop has a very unique set of skills and athleticism. He is long, strong, has great leaping ability, and has the skill set of a small forward. He is another player that would do a lot of damage out of a horns set, which is something Ironwood Ridge did not use a lot of last season. However, new head coach, LeSean Marks, is using him very well in his horn set.
Ajang Aguek (Taylor Made 2019):
Ajang is a very interesting prospect. He has the ability to play/guard 3-5 and has great size and athleticism. He is solid against guards but is best suited defending 3-5. He looked very good on defense and promising on offense. Ajang could use some work on his post moves and becoming a more efficient shooter as he is limited to transition and put backs as of right now. It should be noted that he is a decent mid-range shooter. If he could improve in the post and on his jumper, he would be very solid. As of right now, he defensive ability has gathered him some D1 offers.
