The decision of rewarding players based on upside vs production was constant when it came to ranking different prospects. Our staff balanced the two and valued our results at the end. Our initial number one player in this class is none other than the elite scoring guard R.J. Hampton (pictured above). Hampton is a top-5 player nationally in the class of 2020 and will likely be a future pro. Although he is number one for now, the elite 5-star forward with NBA-ready athleticism aka Greg Brown Greg Brown 6'8" | PF Vandegrift | 2020 State #4 Nation TX definitely wants all the smoke and is looking to snatch that top spot.
Ranking each top 15 big man not named Greg Brown Greg Brown 6'8" | PF Vandegrift | 2020 State #4 Nation TX was very tough. I gave the number 2 big man spot to Jakobe Coles Jakobe Coles 6'7" | PF Guyer | 2020 State #143 Nation TX (ranked 7th) due to his consistent production over the course of the summer. But, he cannot get too comfortable at that spot because big men such as: Jonothan Aku, Eddie Lampkin Eddie Lampkin 6'9" | C Katy Morton Ranch | 2020 State #262 Nation TX , Jaquan Scott Jaquan Scott 6'8" | PF Universal Academy | 2020 State #346 Nation TX or Richard Amaefule Richard Amaefule 6'8" | PF Woodrow Wilson | 2020 State #414 Nation TX can easily resurge and claim that or even a higher spot.
We are sold at Thailand Elder Thailand Elder 6'1" | SG Allen | 2020 State #439 Nation TX ‘s ranking at 28. I do not know if there is a guard in the state who brings as much energy as he does to the game. He competes hard on both ends & will be a part of a talented Allen backcourt.
We are staying bullish on Hayden Hefner Hayden Hefner 6'5" | SG Nederland | 2020 State #210 Nation TX . I love his size for position and the way he gets off the floor. He did not play as well in July as I would have liked him too, but he still has tools that lead me to believe that he can still be a nationally ranked prospect by the time he graduates. We would like to see more aggression out of the Beaumont native in big time situations.
Jahari Long Jahari Long 6'3" | PG Episcopal | 2020 State #168 Nation TX at 14 might be too low. I’m very critical of the guard because of his shot selection and decision making. However, there isn’t a PG with more upside than the 3-star athlete. He also produces on both ends of the floor and can get to rim whenever he wants to. I would like to him connect on better attempted shots from behind the arc and not force the issue at the rim. Do not think that I am denying his talent because elite Episcopal guard can definitely go.
