These rankings will take into consideration both the players next level abilities, but will be based mainly on who we believe will have the top seasons in 2018-2019. They encompass all classes outside of rising freshmen, and while it’s impossible to include every kid we did the best we could.
Here’s a look at the players ranked 25-16 in the Northern VA area, and stay tuned for more content of the same coming up soon.
- Editors Note: These rankings are based on where the kids are slated to play high school basketball this season.
25) Asa Shannon | 6’5” WF | Episcopal 2019
Shannon’s improvement is evident this preseason as he was named to the DMV Elite Top 80 First Team last weekend. With great size on the wing, Shannon has a great motor and tremendous athleticism that allows him to be an impact on both ends of the floor. He’s an energy guy with a good skill set that should be able to impact the game in a number of ways this season.
24) Dowar Jioklow | 6’7” PF | Flint Hill 2020
Jiokolow is on a stacked team which may take away from his production, but his versatility will make him very important for this group. At 6’7”, he can play inside and out, and he can play the three for them which would give them a front court of 6’7”, 6’9” and 6’11”. He’s a good decision maker in transition, he can make plays for others and he can score from all over the court.
23) Cameron Savage | 5’9” PG | South Lakes 2019
Savage should be one of the better public school guards in NOVA this season, and you should see him put up some big numbers in games this season. He isn’t the biggest guy, but he’s lightning quick, he gets in the paint and he makes guys on his team better. He can score off the bounce from deep and has a great middle game to negate his height as well.
22) Garrett Johnson | 6’5” WF | Oakton 2020
A big wing with good size, Johnson is set to have a big season at Oakton this year as a junior. After playing behind his brother Braeden Johnson for years, it’s going to be Garret’s team and he looks ready. He’s big, strong and athletic, and he can get to the rim and finish through contact. If he embraces the role of go-getter, he’ll put up some big numbers this season.
21) Kai Kuper | 6’9” C | Middleburg Academy 2020
The German native is going to be big for Middleburg who has another big time post player in 6’8” Joel Kabimba. Kuper fits perfectly with Kabimba as more of a finesse guy who can step out and stretch the defense and run the offense from the high post. He has some grit to him as he’ll hit the deck, but he needs to put on more weight to be able to bang in the post over here in the States.
20) Jamel Melvin | 6’7” PF | Potomac School 2020
Melvin transfers into Potomac School from DeMatha and should have the same kind of impact that former Potomac School star and current Loyola freshman Devon Flowers had. Much like Flowers, Melvin is a guy who thrives from 15 feet and in when in the half court, as he can face up and blow by or shoot the midrange jumper. He’s mobile and active too, making him a big mismatch for others.
19) Tymu Chenery | 6’6” WF | Episcopal 2020
Chenery is set to explode this season for Episcopal after a solid summer with Team BBC. The long wing is athletic in transition, hits the glass on both ends and he can guard multiple positions on the defensive end. He’s on a pretty stacked team offensively, but he isn’t against doing the dirty work and he’s able to play both forward positions which makes him a mismatch problem.
18) Xavier Lipscomb | 6’1” PG | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes 2020
A lightning quick guard on both ends of the floor, Lipscomb is able to set the tempo for SSSAS by pushing in transition and guarding the basketball very well. He’s strong for his size allowing him to keep defenders in front defensively and finish through contact offensively. He’s a good decision maker with the ball in his hands and he has a toughness and grit to him that makes it easy for teammates to get behind him and follow.
17) Ayan Teel | 5’9” PG | Bishop O’Connell 2019
Another small guard that can flat out go, Teel was a big reason that Bishop O’Connell was so successful last season. With the departure of Xavier Johnson to Pittsburgh, Teel, who’s committed to Mount St. Mary’s, will have the ball in his hands more this season. He can shoot from deep, has a terrific middle game and plays much bigger than his size.
16) Jordan Hairston | 6’1” PG | Flint Hill 2020
Hairston transfers into Flint Hill after putting up big numbers at Westfield last year, and he’ll have more weapons around him that should help him succeed as a playmaker. The 6’1” lead guard has a high IQ, can make plays for himself and others off the bounce and he’s a knock down shooter from deep off the catch. His maturity, leadership and poise will be big as he gives Flint Hill a big time weapon in the backcourt to compliment their huge frontcourt.
