These rankings will take into consideration both the players next level abilities, but will be based mainly on who we believe will have the top seasons in 2018-2019. They encompass all classes outside of rising freshmen, and while it’s impossible to include every kid we did the best we could.
Here’s a look at the players ranked 15-6 in the Northern VA area, and stay tuned for more content of the same coming up soon.
- Editors Note: These rankings are based on where the kids are slated to play high school basketball this season.
15) Daniel Deaver | 6’7” PF | George Marshall 2019
He’s a throwback of a big man, but there aren’t many players who have the entire repertoire that he does on the low block. Deaver isn’t a crazy athletic guy who gets up and down the floor, but in the half court he can seal and finish with both hands, has a number of moves over both shoulders and he can face up and shoot the midrange or rip through and go. His efficiency on the block makes him one of the best post scorers in the entire area.
14) Brayon Freeman | 6’2” PG | Bishop O’Connell 2021
Freeman may be the stretch of this group, because he’s on such a talented O’Connell team with a lot of experience, but since July he’s been so hard to guard. He played up on Loaded VA’s 16U team and was one of their best players, was MVP of the DMV Elite 80 and most importantly he has the ability to make all of his talented teammates lives easy with his playmaking ability. He has a saucy handle and great vision with flashy playmaking ability and it looks like his jumper is coming along nicely.
13) Joel Kabimba | 6’8” PF | Middleburg Academy 2019
Another guy who has had a huge fall, Kabimba is going to the guy that a new, but talented, Middleburg team will play through. The 6’8” big man takes up a lot of space in the paint but gets off his feet nicely to protect the rim, and he can rebound defensively and beat everyone else down the floor for a bucket. He’s an athletic and strong finisher with a high upside, and he should be one of the top bigs in the area this year.
12) Charles Thompson | 6’8” PF | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes 2019
Thompson is going to man the fort for SSSAS, and the Towson commit is ready after steadily improving over the past few seasons. The 6’8” big can protect the rim, rebounds on both ends, he runs the floor and finishes and has shown an improved post game as well. He should average close to a double-double this year and be one of the best bigs in the IAC.
11) Trevor Keels | 6’5” WG | Paul VI 2021
Keels has a lot of competition at PVI, but with their system it could be anyone at any time that has the big games. He’s ready to do it as well, as he was one of the top freshmen in the WCAC and is following in the likes of Jeremy Roach and Ant Harris. He can catch and shoot from deep, he guards all of the perimeter positions well and he’s young, meaning he’s still learning despite being one of the top players in the area already.
10) Alex Fitch | 6’3” WG | Rock Ridge 2019
He may not be the biggest name prospect, and his team may not be a big contender, but expect Fitch to put up big time numbers barring any type of injury this season. After moving to Rock Ridge last year from Roanoke, he set the young school’s scoring record as a junior and was one of the top shooters in the area. At 6’3” he’s super long and he’s lights out from deep, and with his length it’s hard to bother him from deep. He’s likely going to be one of the top scorers in public school ball, or any league, in the area.
9) Amir Nesbitt | 6’1” G | VA Academy 2020
Nesbitt was one of the top newcomers in the DMV last year, coming in and leading a talented Virginia Academy school in scoring. The 6’1” combo can create his own shot off the bounce, he can move off the basketball where he can knock shots and he gets to the free throw line a lot. He’s also a capable and solid distributor when teams start to double him on drives.
8) Josh Oduro | 6’7” PF | Paul VI 2019
The George Mason commit may not put up the biggest numbers in this list, but if PVI is going to win a WCAC title this year they will need him to be a consistent and big time force in the paint. He fits their system well as he can run the floor, rebound on both ends, has a solid perimeter skill set as far as shooting and passing and he can score with both hands in the post. If he can give them around 10 and 10 he’s going to be the x factor this season.
7) Charlie Weber | 6’7” PF | Bishop O’Connell 2019
Weber was one of the top incoming players in the WCAC last season, and his impact will likely be bigger this year with the departure of WCAC POY Xavier Johnson who’s now at Pittsburgh. Weber is extremely effective both in the paint and out to 18 feet where he can catch and shoot. He’s explosive and able to play way above the rim on both ends, and the added bonus of him clearing out the paint for guards is that he can crash and get second opportunities offensively.
6) Evan Buckley | 6’0” PG | Stone Bridge 2019
He ran the show to perfection with DC Premier this summer, leading them to the Under Armour Championship in July. While he was the guy who made open shots, got them into sets and made great decisions, with Stone Bridge he’s going to do that and do much more. He’s a knock down shooter from deep, a strong and crafty finisher around the rim and he can create shots for himself and others off the bounce. He’s going to be a big reason we believe Stone Bridge will compete for a state championship this year.
