Introducing the Prep Hoops Texas Report

One of our goals at Prep Hoops Texas is to provide the most accurate and credible information to college coaches about the most talented kids in the Lone Star State. Our media source covers kids across the state who can play at all levels. A way we will assist coaches who subscribe to our site is by providing scouting reports on multiple athletes in the 2020, 2021, and 2022 classes. We want to cover as many 2020 kids as possible first because those will be the kids coaches will be mainly evaluating come next summer. Also, towards the end of the high school season, we will add unsigned seniors to our reports. The Prep Hoops Texas Report will provide a detailed, bullet-pointed scouting report on multiple kids across the state. Be on the lookout for each one because there is a chance you might miss a kid that could fill a need. This article focuses on two high major shooting guards who are currently are nationally ranked in R.J. Hampton and Gerald Doakes.

R.J. Hampton / 6’5″ / SG /  Little Elm /  Level: High Major-NBA Prospect

Strengths:

  • James Harden type of guard; wired to score the basketball, but also capable of creating for teammates; sees the floor and finds teammates on backdoor cuts; can thread the needle at times
  • Three-level scorer; pure jump shooter from the outside; has NBA range to along with an NBA ready skillset
  • Finishes craftly in the paint, but will also rise up and dunk on a defender or rim protector
  • Possesses long arms and solid athleticism; has a great feel for the game
  • Has a smooth game; once he gets it going, a threat to go for 40 plus
  • Lives at the free throw line; draws fouls; solid flop seller
  • Is not a point guard; more of a two-guard who is great at making plays for others

Weaknesses:

  • Played for his father throughout his time in grassroots; Will possibly want a certain amount of freedom within the offense at the next level
  • Skinny frame; will need to put on weight

Gerald Doakes

Gerald Doakes / 6’2″ / SG /  Milby /  Level: High Major

Strengths:

  • Supreme athletic guard with a thin frame; very bouncy and explosive
  • Hits shots off the bounce from the perimeter; can make tough shots when he gets it going; jumps very high on his jumpshot, gets very good elevation by releasing the ball at the highest point of his jump
  • Has shown premier scoring ability and elite upside
  • Dynamic in the open court; plays above the rim in the open court; a threat to drive baseline and embarrass a rim protector

Weaknesses:

  • Shot selection is very questionable; forces the action and settles taking contested jump shots from the outside
  • Will need to add strength
  • Needs to utilize his athletic gifts more on the defensive end
