We began with Southeast, Northwest, Northeast, and Central Ohio Wednesday to Friday. For the weekend, we’re finishing up with Dayton and Cincinnati.
Considering the high school season’s imminence, it makes sense to compare players to guys they’ll compete with in the coming months. All the while, keep in mind that we want to focus mostly on the non-Division I prospects, instead bringing awareness to lesser-known recruits.
(#27) Carl Blanton, 6’2” G/W, Trotwood
It’s beginning to feel like Blanton is a prospect that Division II programs should pay attention to. He’s a circuit player with All Ohio Red, however, which could deter non-D-I recruitment. He’s also one of their most efficient players on a low volume of shots and a standout defender. But, becoming more willing and able to shoot the long ball is important as there aren’t a ton of 6’2” two-guards at the D-I level who don’t shoot it excellently. Blanton is the highest ranked guard in Dayton’s 2020 class.
(#43) Trevon Ellis, 6’3” G, Stivers
Ellis is a near-4.0 GPA student who recently scored a 26 on his first ACT attempt. Oh yeah, he’s pretty smart on the basketball floor also. Ellis likes to pick apart defenses from inside the arch. He makes good decisions on the drive and has a knack for finding forwards while probing around the basket. Ellis’s mid-range jumper and finishing ability are up to par while his 3-point range hasn’t quite developed.
(#53) Sammy Anderson, 6’2” G, Trotwood
Power 5 football offers suggest that Anderson will wind up on the football side of things as a recruit. But until he officially accepts an offer, we will continue including him in our prospect rankings. For Trotwood, Anderson is a super quick and irritating force on the defensive end. He fits the Rams’ pressure scheme perfectly while scoring opportune buckets within the offense. But they may need him to become a source of offensive creation as an upperclassman to remain competitive at the statewide level.
(#90) Darren Rubin, 6’1” PG, Oakwood
Rubin, our top ranked junior point guard in the area, has a game predicated on his pull-up shooting ability. Rubin stretches defenses beyond the 3-point arch and he’s equally efficient pulling up in transition as he is off the catch. He is aggressive as a shooter and can play off the ball too as more of a score-first player. Rubin distributes the ball well as a primary ball-handler and passing lanes tend to be wider because he commands the defense to be attentive to the arch.
(#120) Carter Gray, 6’3” G, Arcanum
Gray is an outside shooting specialist with some size on the wing. He made First Team All Cross County Conference last season. Gray is a stat-stuffer of the scoring column at the high school level but finding more creative ways to score the ball against more athletic competition is the challenge. Also, he’s been hampered by a lower body injury off and on.
