We began with Southeast, Northwest, and Northeast Ohio in the early week. Expect insight on Dayton and Cincinnati this weekend. But, for now, it’s all about the middle of Ohio!
Considering the high school season’s imminence, it makes sense to compare players to guys they’ll compete with in the coming months. All the while, keep in mind that we want to focus mostly on the non-Division I prospects, instead bringing awareness to lesser-known recruits.
(#60) Kobe Righter, 5’11”, DeSales
Righter certainly doesn’t steal the show with athleticism and physical presence. Frankly, he’s noticeably undersized. But, in playing with Nova’s top 16U crew last season, the team always played their best with Righter on the floor. He outsmarts opponents and can find where the help-side is coming from in a cerebral fashion. Righter’s shifty quickness, ball-handling ability, and outside shooting threat allows him to penetrate regularly. He scores it with range and is a crafty finisher, also.
(#70) Tahleik Walker, 6’2”, Pickerington Central
Walker is still developing as playmaker, although his handle and quickness are promising signs of what he could become. He already has defensive prowess. Walker is a pretty long athlete with exceptional lateral quickness. The junior, who is reserved away from the court, approaches defense with an intensity — whether it’s fighting through screens or sliding with quick guards in a fullcourt press. Walker’s defensive impact earned him time in the State Semifinalist’s rotation as a sophomore.
(#108) Jack Santa Emma, 5’8”, Alder
Santa Emma is another very intelligent offensive point guard from the area. He scores with floaters and outside jumpers when the defense gives. But, his primary threat is as a distributor. He handles the ball very well under pressure and can get into the lane with jab steps and ball fakes. Tough player who welcomes contact on the drive and bellies up in one-on-one defense.
(#117) Keaton Turner, 5’9”, Dublin Coffman
Turner is an interesting, underrated point guard who can really score the rock. He is definitely undersized but can compensate with skill. During the summer with a lesser-talented Mid Ohio Pumas Grey team, Turner proved capable of creating his own shot throughout the course of entire games.
He would be a featured playmaker for most teams in Ohio, but Dublin Coffman has a mid-major/high-major prospect ahead of him in the rotation with Dominiq Penn. The Rocks also are stacked with senior role players. It could take another year before Turner earns significant playing time, but we encourage D-III programs to keep an eye peeled whenever he’s afforded opportunity.
(#137) Julian Binford, 5’7”, Eastmoor Academy
Binford’s game is all about speed and transition. First of all, he initiates a lot of fast breaks with his knack for causing turnovers with quick hands. He’s a sneaky defender who can poke the ball out when an opponent crosses over or sneaks past him. Then, Binford beats everyone up the floor in a dead sprint. He shows good body control as a finisher and he can stroke it from the outside. Becoming more effective in the halfcourt is certainly the concern.
