We began with Southeast, Northwest, and Northeast Ohio in the early week. Expect insight on Dayton and Cincinnati this weekend. But, for now, it’s all about the middle of Ohio!
Considering the high school season’s imminence, it makes sense to compare players to guys they’ll compete with in the coming months. All the while, keep in mind that we want to focus mostly on the non-Division I prospects, instead bringing awareness to lesser-known recruits.
(#34) Ethyn Kuhns, 6’4”, Bloom Carroll
Kuhns really blossomed this spring with Nova Village. We named him Second Team All Spring for the grassroots season and we believe he’s a premier D-II or low-major guard prospect. He legitimately scores it from all three levels. With the use of ball fakes, he can get into the lane and he plays with good balance off the dribble. Very strong upper body that he uses to finish in traffic and crash the glass. Poised competitor.
The challenge with Kuhns? He’s a stud on the football field, too. He has a great build for a quarterback and he produces, earning Third Team All State honors last season in Division IV. But if you can get him on campus for a basketball visit, it would potentially be worth your time in the long-run.
(#100) Brian Collier, 5’11”, Grandview Heights
Collier has been one of the top two leading scorers in consecutive seasons for the Grandview Heights Bobcats. That’s his thing, getting a bucket. He penetrates via jab steps and ball fakes, but he also attacks quickly when he catches on the wing. Sneaky quick. Collier is more of a D-III athlete but his skill should make him a valuable recruit at that level.
(#105) Taquan Simington, 6’2”, Columbus South
Simington jumps out of the gym! His athleticism around the basket is almost breath-taking. He can also translate that verticality to his pull-up shooting game, where he doesn’t need much separation to score it because he can rise above. Extending his range and using his explosiveness to make plays for others on the drive would push him to another level.
(#143) Zane Leitwein, 6’2”, Gahanna
We’re pretty sure Leitwein hasn’t even seen the varsity floor yet for Gahanna Lincoln, a program oozing with guard talent. However, that doesn’t mean that Leitwein can’t shoot the rock with the best of them. After tearing up the 2017 Top 250 Expo, he impressed once again in July with an unassuming Ohio Hoopsters team. He scores efficiently, either shooting on the catch or getting to the rim with off-ball cuts.
(#153) Jayden Prince, 6’1”, Dublin Scioto
Prince was this year’s surprise performer from the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo. He proved to be a master of the fundamentals and was a relentless team player. The mid-range jumper is his sweet spot and he works hard away from the ball to find opportunities for that shot. Prince also makes a positive impact defensively with hustle and communication. Overall solid ball player.
