The high school season is approaching rapidly, and with that in mind, this seems like the most time-appropriate way to break it down. These kids will be competing for conference and regional championships with each other very soon!
In case you missed it: We have covered Northwest Ohio Point Guards, Guards/Wings, and Forwards and Northeast Ohio Point Guards, Guards, Wings, and Forwards.
(#6) Ben Roderick, 6’6” W, Olentangy Liberty
Before tearing his left ACL, Roderick was efficiently scoring 24.4 points a night for Olentangy Liberty, good enough to rise-up high-major recruiting boards. In-state Division I programs, from the HM to MM level, have kept tabs on Roderick throughout his rehab process. But senior year will be the moment of truth for him as a recruit. If he can regain his physical athleticism, teams like Xavier could be all in on Roderick once again. Otherwise, expect him to land at a MAC program.
(#18) Morgan Safford, 6’4” G/W, Bishop Hartley
Safford is one of four unsigned prospects in the 2019 top 20. Along with plain development, his patience may springboard his recruitment for regional D-I programs looking to fill spots late. Also, Safford is going to be the focal point for Hartley this season. He can play as the primary ball-handler while defending power forwards. Finally, Safford’s spot-up shooting ability is becoming a reliable weapon.
(#40) Bo Myers, 6’5” G/W, Logan
Malone is bringing in a three-level scorer who broke-out as a recruit during the spring. Myers was Second Team All-State in Division I last season, averaging 22.0 points. He can create his shot from anywhere on the floor. Although Myers’s production tampered off in July, his size and shooting ability is a enough of an asset to remain in the top 40 for this senior class.
(#53) Terin Kinsway, 6’5” W/F, Delaware Hayes
It’s dawning upon us that Kinsway may slip through the cracks of in-state D-II programs and we just cannot understand how. A powerful 6’5” combo forward, Kinsway rebounds with enthusiasm and verticality. He is excellent in the pick-and-pop and shows comfort in shooting off the catch. He has a couple moves in the lane and scores it efficiently inside. Any D-IIs playing small ball or up-tempo need to get in on Kinsway.
(#76) Derek Van Vlerah, 6’5” W, Dublin Coffman
We’re just looking for confidence and consistency from Van Vlerah this season. He has most of the tools to be a defensive force on the wing, only lacking strength on his frame. He shows flashes of being a slasher, but his lack of aggressiveness worries us. Van Vlerah does understand team offense though and makes quick reads on when to pass. At the end of the day though, perimeter defense is going to be his calling card.
(#132) Mitchell Kershner, 6’3” G/W, Olentangy Liberty
Kershner came off the board earlier this week with his commitment to Rochester. Toughness, team-oriented basketball, and defense are his strengths as a player. Academics are where he truly shines. Kershner might be the best student in the 2019 rankings with a 4.4 GPA and 34 ACT. He’s the perfect glue guy on an Olentangy Liberty team that could surprise people this season if Roderick is healthy.
