District 8-5A Preview
The Contenders: Landry-Walker & Bonnabel
For the past 5 or so years, the cream of the crop coming out of New Orleans in 5A has been Landry-Walker and Bonnabel. They have had some high profile battles in the playoffs, including meeting a couple years ago in the state title game. Both of these teams are losing talent off of last years team, but they both do as good a job of reloading talent as anyone in the state. For Landry-Walker, they are going to be lead by 2019 G Dywan Griffin and Torey Cargo. Griffin is going to have to take a step forward as far as scoring the ball goes this season, as he won’t be able to rely on the pair of 6’8 centers that he has had for most of his career. For Bonnabel, they are going to be lead by their pair of 2019 G Rodney Munson and Donte Mitchell. They have some really exciting kids coming up the pipeline, such as 2021 Will Allen and Theo Johnson.
Should Compete: West Jefferson
West Jefferson should have a pretty solid team this season, and they are going to be lead at the guard spots. I’m a fan of Dajour Lloyd’s game, and he does a good job of getting into the teeth of the defense and consistently making the right decision. Next to him, West Jeff will throw out Tony White, who has been putting up some pretty big numbers since his sophomore season.
Best of the Rest: Chalmette, East Jefferson, John Ehret, LW Higgins, & Grace King
This is about as top heavy of a district as you will see in the state. The teams at the top are going into the season with one goal on their mind; a state title. For the bottom half of the league however, a good season is going to be finishing over .500.
