Contenders, Prospect, & Sleepers: UIL 6A-III District 17
It is October and that means its only days away from the UIL season opening games. Let’s take a dive into various districts, and begin previewing teams and players to watch! Today we dive into the UIL 6A-II District 17!
Pre-Season Player of the Year
Jesse Zarzuela really made a big splash this summer. The University of Texas at El Paso commit is looking to have a big year. Jesse can score at all 3 levels. He plays hard noise defense. He is a great team leader with a high IQ.
Team to Beat
Spring Woods Tigers are the new foe to the district, and the team to beat in the district. They will be led by senior guards Zarzuela and Gibson. Senior forward Nico Hardin will also add to the mix. Look for them to make an improvement from last year as they had an early playoff exit in the first round. Last year record was 19-14(9-5).
Biggest Threat
Cypress Ridge will be a threat in the district. They have two really solid guards in senior Derrick Carter and junior Jestin Porter. They were the top two scorers from last season Porter 17 points per game, and Carter 13 points per game.
Sleeper
Houston Memorial, although they are new to district they bring back a lot of experience. Look out for them to beat a lot of teams people wouldn’t expect them to beat.
