Top 250 Expo: Combo guards who raised their profile (2021)
Here is a look at several 2021 guards who raised their profile at the Prep Hoops Kansas Top 250 Expo held on Sunday at Blue Valley West.
23 — Sterling Chapman, 6’4, PG/SG, 2021, Campus (Kan.)
Chapman showed off the around all-around game that has made him one of the state’s premier point guard prospects. He has terrific size and some good bounce, can lead a team or put the ball in the basket. He showed off a good mid-range game on Sunday as he uses some really good bounce off the floor to elevate over defenders.
31-Sam Derning, 6’2, G, 2021, Shawnee Mission West (Kan.)
Derning is a tenacious defender who can come away with the ball if you aren’t careful. He moves incredibly well and is active on both sides of the floor. He fights for position when the ball goes up and makes contact with opponents. He runs the lanes, contests shots and moves off the ball well in a motion offense.
41 — Ben Gutekunst, 6’0, G, 2021, Olathe Northwest (Kan.)
A rising sophomore, Gutekunst brings a certain flair to the court with the ability to create plays off the bounce for himself and others, as well as the ability to score the ball. He is a strong perimeter shooter with the ability to connect from behind the arc, but he mostly impressed at the 250 with his playmaking skills and his court vision.
74-Isaac Patterson, 6’4, G, 2021, Blue Valley North (Kan.)
A thin player who can drive to the hoop and make things happen. Patterson can block shots, run the floor and jam it down the throats of opposing players who get caught standing in the lane. He was forced to play a post position most of the day (he seemed incredibly comfortable behind the arc), but he held his own close to the basket. A player that tall and athletic just finds opportunities. He’s going to make things happen.
