Top 250 Camp: 2020 Evals Pt 1
The PrepHoopsIllinois Top 250 Camp was this past weekend in Deerfield, Illinois. It was the best group of prospect in recent memory at all ages! Here is Part 1 of our evaluations of the Class of 2020!
SF Christian Shumate (Plainfield East)
Shumate is a freak show athlete! The 6’5” small forward has unreal bounce. He was an absolute force blocking shots. In one game alone he had seven swats! They came in a variety of ways with LeBron come from behind blocks, weak side blocks, and swatting perimeter jumpers. Offensively he played above the rim with big dunks and slashes to the hoop. Jumper needs to continue to improve to max out his ability.
SF Jayden Johnson (Batavia)
Johnson is a 6’4” wing that is just such an effortless scorer. He is one of the best shooters in his class with a free flowing shot from deep. When he gets rolling he can win games by himself from three. His game off the bounce is more crafty than explosive, but he gets the job done consistently. Couple nice takes when we watched him with the ability to finish through contact inside. Quality rebounder from his wing spot. High IQ wing that plays the game the right way.
PG Joey Tianen (Niles Notre Dame)
Tianen is a 6’3″ point guard that has quality size at the lead guard spot. Effective in the drive and kick game. Solid ball handler. He had a few slippery drives.
PG Luke Scheffers (St. Charles North)
Scheffers is a 6’1” point guard that has an advanced feel for the game at the lead guard spot. Pushes the tempo in the open floor always having his head up looking to make a play. Slippery drives through traffic for tough layups.
PF Sangolay Njie (Whitney Young)
Njie is a powerfully built four man that has a strong body. When engaged in the game and playing with a high-motor he has a chance to be a big time rebounder. That is what he did at Top 250 snatching rebounds over and over again. Offensively he displayed some better footwork than we had previously seen out of him on quick post moves. At times settled too much for forced three point shots.
SF DeAndre Hagan (Brother Rice)
Hagan is an angular wing that elevated his game in July with Chicago Lockdown. Long arms. Plays with a high motor and activity level. Rebounds well from his wing position. Finishes well around the cup.
PG Anthony Rattanasavanh (Christian Life)
This 5’10” point guard proved to be a pass first point guard throughout the camp. Couple nice straight line takes in the lane as well, but definitely best as a passer.
SG Danny Blank (St. Francis)
Blank is a 6’2” wing that showed flashes late in July with the Mac Irvin Fire as a shooting specialist. He has a clean looking shot even when he doesn’t necessarily make it. A couple areas that we hadn’t seen before that will add value to his game are improved ball handling and he looked to be a capable on ball defender.
PG Grant Niego (Lyons)
After a serious injury during the summer on the circuit with Chicago Lockdown it was great to see Niego back out on the floor! He is a tough and competitive guard in the mold of his older brothers. Crafty guard that likes to use shot fakes to set up his drives or relocate to shoot the ball. Also snuck in for a couple put backs on the offensive glass.
PF Kendale Anderson (Leo)
Anderson is a physically built 6’6” four man that is a strong area rebounder. The majority of his offensive damage is done by getting on the offensive glass with put backs. A lot of brute force out of this junior big man from Leo.
SF Kyle Lillwitz (Lemont)
This 6’4” wing showed some things that we liked a few days earlier at the Breakaway Basketball workout. The left handed wing has a nice combination of toughness and skill. Quality perimeter shooter that can hit shots off the catch at a nice clip. Also mixed in a couple gritty slashes.
SF Jabari Chiphe (Walter Payton)
This Walter Payton Prep 2020 wing continues to fly under the radar of college coaches. We expect him to have a huge junior campaign. At the PrepHoops Top 250 he displayed the ability to play both on and off the ball. Super athletic and has good strength. Pop off the bounce which was shown on a sweet baseline take for an up and under. Excels scoring in transition. Improved as a passer.
SF Paul Zilinskas (Richards)
This small forward from Richards is one of the bigger sleepers at the wing spot in 2020, but it seems he has some buzz starting to build among college coaches. Rebounds well for his size. His biggest asset offensively is his shooting from deep. One of the best catch and shoot threats in his class. Also showed some handles and passing especially on one play where he crossed his man and then dished it off for a nice dime. Got a couple steals as well.
SG Nick Smoldt (Plainfield East)
Smoldt is a 6’2” guard that plays bigger than his height because of his length. Long and angular two guard that rebounds very well. Smooth looking shot that he connected on a couple times from three. Definitely some projectable upside here.
C Connor McCance (Oswego)
This 6’8” center from Oswego had quite a back to back showing over the last week at the Breakaway workout and at Top 250. He has legit size and strength in the post. More mobile than he looks. Finishes well around the hoop catching quick dump off passes. Nice right handed hook shot. Garners deep post position before the catch. Volume area rebounder. Touch from mid-range on his shot has improved.
PG Jordan Green (Marian Catholic)
Green is a long guard that displayed some speed in the open floor. Also had a smooth take in the half court. Active on both ends of the floor. Solid on ball defender that has some toughness.
SG Lee Farkas (Rochelle Zell)
Farkas stands at 6’2” with a thick body. He might not have the most projectability, but should find a home at a small college because of his toughness. Scored on a few power drives inside.
PF Seryee Lewis (Kenwood)
Lewis is the top big man in the 2020 class and throughout the day he was matched up with some of the other D1 post players. He shined every game we saw him play. What stands out about Lewis is his elite athleticism at the power forward spot. He is so bouncy and that was shown on both ends off the floor. Offensively he had several monster dunks, athletic takes from the mid-post in, and an array of hook shots. His skill level on the block continues to improve. Excellent rebounder that snatches them out of the air and has an explosive second jump. Shot blocking presence as well.
PG Christian Czerniak (St. Charles North)
Czerniak is a 6’1″ point guard from St. Charles North High School that is a scrappy guard and solid passer. Threw a couple nice passes. Decent ball handler. Czerniak didn’t show much of a scoring game in the time we evaluated him. Missed a couple threes. Overall his athleticism will definitely need to improve going forward. Could add strength as well. Defensively his quickness could make strides. D3 prospect.
F Robert Postma (Whitney Young)
Postma is a 6’5” forward that should be a role player this season on one of the state’s most talent rich squads. Played with a competitiveness throughout the day and had a big dunk.
SG Davis Walker (Home School)
Walker might be the most underrated two guard in the 2020 class. He is a home schooled prospect so he doesn’t get much buzz during the high school season, but shined in the limited time we saw him on the circuit and did so again at Top 250. Thick bodied two guard that bombs in threes from deep. Quick release on his shot and has consistent accuracy. Almost looks like it is a set shot. Displayed some drive and kick skill as well.
