Top 250 Camp: 2019 Evals Pt 1
The PrepHoopsIllinois Top 250 Camp was this past weekend in Deerfield, Illinois. It was the best group of prospect in recent memory at all ages! Here is Part 1 of our evaluations of the Class of 2019!
SG Dylan Engler (Oswego)
The 6’5” wing from Oswego came on strong at the end of the summer seeing his stock rise in our eyes and that of college coaches. He has size, strength, and length on the perimeter. Really like how well he shoots the ball from deep. Very good catch and shoot threat and has solid athleticism.
SG Adam Taylor (Providence Catholic)
This 6’4” shooting guard that has quality size on the perimeter with the ability to shoot the basketball from deep. At times he can get a little too shot happy. Showed more to his game scoring in transition than we had previously seen.
SG Julian Barr (Lincoln Way East)
Barr is one of the most under recruited prospects in the state in our opinion. This 6’3” two guard is an elite sniper from beyond the arc. He can really shoot the ball at a high rate off the catch. Floor stretcher that will need to continue to develop other areas of his game as he settles for that at times, but he is one of the best shooters in the state.
SG Lance Jones (Evanston)
Jones is a recent commitment to Southern Illinois and the top 20 prospect put on a show at PrepHoops Top 250! The powerful combo guard scored in a variety of ways, but was most effective using his crisp ball handling and power to beat his man off the bounce and finish at the hoop. Consistently won in one on one situations living at the rim. Wasn’t selfish either as he was willing to get others involved with sound passes that led to assists. Also was a presence defensively getting steals.
SG Mohammed Alausa (Chicago U-High)
Alausa flew a bit under the radar throughout the circuit, but made a huge impact at the PrepHoops Top 250 during the morning session. He is a strongly built shooting guard with above average athleticism. The Chicago U-High product displayed his ability to get buckets in bunches with aggressive takes to the hoop where he got to the basket and finished with a variety of difficult layups. Can hit a mid-range jumper on occasion.
PG Jaheim Holden (Evanston)
Holden was another Evanston player that impressed. The tiny lefty guard can really go and he showed it again. Quick and shifty with the ball allows him to push in transition with his speed. Crisp passer that finds guys in the open floor as well as in the drive and kick game. Scored several times on acrobatic and-1s. Connected on some deep threes too. Looks like the shot has continued to improve its consistency. Despite his size he is a very pesky on ball defender at the point of attack.
SG Michael Molloy (Lane Tech)
Molloy is a lefty two guard that has a quick release on his jump shot. He snuck in a few slippery drives as well.
PG Fred Cleveland (Leo)
The thing you have to like the most out of this 5’9” guard from Leo is his tremendous speed. He is so fast with the ball from end to end with an explosive burst to get through defenders. Range on his jumper to beyond the three point arc. Despite his size he is a sound defender because of his long arms and anticipation at the point of attack.
F Andrew Veon (Riverside Brookfield)
This 6’6” combo forward will be an excellent small college player. Size, strength, and has some bounce to his game. Rebounds well high pointing boards. Plays with a very high motor and activity level. Runs the floor hard and can put it on the deck on occasion from the mid-range in.
PG Isiah Burd (Bolingbrook)
Burd has been a prospect we have been a fan of for a while. Didn’t get as much playing time as we expected last year with so many quality guards for the Raiders, but look for him to be a key role player this season. Long and angular guard that knows how to use that length on the defensive end. Can hit an occasional three and plays with a high IQ.
PG Terrion Murdix (Springfield Southeast)
This 6’0” point guard from Southeast had a breakout junior season helping lead his team to the 3A state championship game. They will be one of the favorites to head back to Peoria this season. Quick and shifty guard that has the ball on a string. Scored on a few slippery drives through traffic with layups. Was actually pretty effective sneaking in on the offensive glass. Like what he does defensively getting steals and putting pressure on opposing guards.
PF Dylan West (Hillcrest)
This 6’7” power forward put together a consistent day of work at PrepHoops Top 250. Consistently garnered deep post position all day long which resulted in him being an effective scorer on the block. Showed a good combination of power and skill down low with some right handed hook shots and powering through his man. Efficient with his touches down low scoring. Hit a mid-range jumper. Nice job rebounding too. Not the greatest athlete, but gets the most out of what he has got. Good performance for West!
G Tyrice Rogers Jr (Rich South)
Rogers is a 6’1″ point guard from Rich South High School. He is a thicker guard that displayed his ability to score off the bounce mostly with power and had crisp ball handling. I think one of the things that Rogers could work on is his passing. At the lead guard spot to max out his potential at the next level his feel for the game would need to improve.
SF Keeshawn Chambers (Thornton)
This 6’5” small forward definitely elevated his stock with his play at PrepHoops Top 250. Explosive wing with plus athleticism. He showed that off with a monster baseline take blowing past his man and finishing with an up and under. Chambers spent a considerable amount of time throughout the day above the rim. Best slashing and playing in transition. Potential as a defender.
SG Mazeed Oluewu (North Shore Country Day)
Two guard at 6’3” with nice strength. Attacks downhill. At times can be a little wild, but definitely can score some off the bounce. Hit a corner three when we were watching him.
PG Artese Stapleton (Kenwood)
Stapleton is a slippery point guard that is smooth with the ball. Slithers through traffic getting in the lane where he makes plays for himself and others. Rangy on ball defender. Also crashed the glass for a couple put backs.
SF Kennan Jones (Whitney Young)
Jones is a long and lanky small forward that can definitely be used in some small ball four situations. Lefty is a sound pull up jump shooter and can hit from three as well.
