Recruiting Report: Spencer Macke (2019)
Highlands Senior Spencer Macke is anxious to hit the floor for the Bluebirds this season after having to sit out his Junior season due to transfer. The lefty guard is at his best in transition, ” I love to play fast and always push the ball. I think playing fast in transition is the best way to play basketball. My biggest strength is my ability to shoot. If I am able to get hot I can usually stay hot for a while and knock down some key shots. Another strength is the way I guard. I keep up with quick guards and always keep the pressure up.” Moving forward, Macke is trying to strengthen his off hand so that he can be a more complete scorer, “my biggest weakness is my right hand. I can drive and pull up with my right hand but I’m not comfortable with it like I am with my left. I also need to get get stronger and put on some good weight.”
Spencer finished his AAU career as part of a solid Kentucky Royals team that enjoyed some success over the course of the season, “The season went well. We didn’t do as good in the beginning of the season as it took a while for us to really come together as a team. Towards the end we really started to glue with each other and knew what our strengths and our weaknesses were.” Heading into his Senior campaign at Highlands, Macke believes that he can take his renewed emphasis on rebounding to his high school season, “during the AAU season, I feel like we played against some of the best big guys in the country. To me that really helped me develop my big game. I was able to drive and use my body to shield the ball and get up shots against 6’9 and 6’10 who could all jump. I also feel like it helped me get stronger with getting up at the rim. I was able to pull down some big rebounds against those guys and I feel like it made me stronger and I can use that in school ball.”
Macke is going to have a tough decision to make before committing to play at the next level. He currently has a lot of offers at all different levels.”I am hearing from a bunch of colleges and universities. I don’t have any offers right now. I have had a bunch of D3 schools offer me spots on their team. I am talking with Flagler and went to their camp this summer. I just took a visit to West Virginia. Coach Huggins offered me a walk on spot at West Virginia University. Charleston Southern reached out and wants to keep track of me this season. I also went to Dartmouth this summer for elite camp. Youngstown State came to multiple games this summer and I went to their elite camp this summer.” Anxious to hit the floor after sitting out the 2017-18 high school season, Spencer Macke has goals for himself and his team this season, ” My expectations are to be the best team we can be. I think we will win the district and I think we have the ability to win the region. I hope to put up some big numbers in some big wins this season as well.” If Spencer can reach his individual potential this season, his team should improve drastically and his list of college opportunities will continue to grow. Look out for Macke and Highlands this season in Northern Kentucky.
