Recruiting Report: Shemar Smith (2019)
This weekend Shemar Smith surprised many by announcing his commitment to Central Oklahoma. Smith is the highest ranked Oklahoma prospect to go NCAA Division II since Micah Speight (SNU). There were a number of reasons for Smith to pick Central Oklahoma. The biggest reason Smith decided to go through with the decision to pick the Bronchos was the trust he has with the coaching staff.
“UCO is home for me because I know that the coaches and players will take care of me,” said Smith. “The coaching staff is fantastic. They called and texted me every day to see how I was doing.”
Many had Smith pegged as a prospect that would take the JUCO to NCAA Division I route. However, after analyzing everything Smith decided to go with fit over level after taking an official visit to Central Oklahoma.
“At first I did have thoughts about going JUCO and then D1,” said Smith. “But I realized that it’s not always about going D1 it’s about going to a college that will take care of you and and get your business done. Which is why I went to UCO.”
Smith will be playing in one of the toughest NCAA Division II conferences in the country, the MIAA. The 6’6 Forward is super talented with great athleticism. If the potential of Smith blossoms at UCO they will have an all-conference player on their hands. Smith credits God, his parents, and coaches for his success.
“The man above, my parents and coaches are the reason why I went this far in this in the game of basketball,” said Smith. “Without me praying every night to God, my parents sacrificing things for me, and my coaches kicking my butt to work hard I would not have made it this far.”
