Recruiting Notebook: Breakaway Basketball
On Thursday PrepHoopsIllinois attended a workout with Breakaway Basketball. We were able to see a lot of quality 2019 prospects and afterwards we caught up with quite a few of them to get updates on where things stand with their recruiting. Check out our Recruiting Notebook: Breakaway Basketball!
PG Josh Berry (Lyons)
Berry is a high IQ point guard that can shoot it. He told us that he is headed to Carnegie Mellon on Friday for a visit. Next weekend he will visit MIT officially. Other schools involved include DePauw, Haverford, and New York University. He spoke about what stands out about the two schools he is headed to officially saying “They are both high academic schools. I want to go to the best school possible. I really like both coaches. I have been to both unofficially and I really like their coaching staffs. I am looking forward to meeting the team.” Berry would like to decide before the season where he will be going.
SG Ocean Johnson (Leyden)
Johnson is a super athletic two guard that can get out in transition and defend. He told us he is hearing from Carthage, Aurora, and Dominican. Carroll wants him to come visit. He has visited Carthage saying about the visit, “It was pretty good. The court looks nice. It wasn’t fully done, but I had a good image of how it was going to look. I am interested in them.” Johnson wants to play the season out to see all his options.
C Noah May (Downers Grove North)
May is a long and rangy center with a lot of upside at the small college level. He has been talking to St. Mary’s (MN), Aurora, Wisconsin Platteville, and Wisconsin Whitewater. What stood out about St. Mary’s when he visited there? “I really liked it. The campus was super cool with the mountains. I like the coaching staff. They just got a coach from Mercury Elite so I know him.”
SF Latik Murphy (Morton)
Murphy is a big time athlete on the wing that can really score it. Recently picked up his first offer from Minnesota-Crookston. What does he like about the D2 program? “They showed me a lot of love. They want me to visit their campus. I am going to go next month.” No visit date locked in yet. Holy Cross South Bend and Illinois Springfield have been talking to him as well.
PF Caden Phillips (Glenbard West)
Phillips is a mauler on the glass that gets a lot of put backs around the hoop. On his recruiting he said, “I have been talking to Rose-Hulman and University of Chicago primarily right now.” What stands out about Rose-Hulman? “It is a strong engineering school for sure. That is something I want to do education wise. They have a really good reputation when it comes to that.” What about University of Chicago? “Another really good school. They don’t have engineering. They have math and physics. It has a great name and does great things in the basketball community. Strong conference.”
PG Zach Vaia (Riverside Brookfield)
This RB point guard is tough and can really shoot it. He updated us on his recruiting. “I have been talking to Oshkosh, UW-Lacrosse, UW-Whitewater, St. Norbert’s. Still the same with Carroll. I have been talking to Lawrence. Also Elmhurst and North Central. I have upcoming visits to North Central. Elmhurst wants me to visit. This past Monday Trinity came out to see me. Loras came out to see me too.” Any schools standing out? “Probably Carroll. I feel most comfortable with them and talk to them the most.”
PF Andrew Veon (Riverside Brookfield)
Veon is a combo forward with a nice combination of toughness and skill. He updated us on his recruitment saying “I have been hearing a lot from Illinois Wesleyan, Elmhurst, Trinity International, Carroll University, Roosevelt, and a lot of CCIW Schools. I have visited Elmhurst already.” Also plans on getting out to Illinois Wesleyan, St. Norbert, and Carroll in October.
