Ranking the Five Best Duo’s For 2018-19
Looking ahead to the 2018-19 high school basketball season, Prep Hoops Wisconsin ranks the top five duos who will tear up the Badger State…
1. Jalen Johnson and Jamari Sibley (Nicolet)
If this duo is half as good as they are together in AAU, it’s going to be major trouble for the rest of the state. Sibley averaged 16.8 points per game as a sophomore while leading the Knights one game shy of the state tournament. He’ll team up with Jalen Johnson, a Sun Prairie transfer, who led the Cardinals to state after posting 18.4 points per contest.
The likely preseason favorite in Division 2, Nicolet will also get Johnson and Sibley some major help as Kobe Johnson comes over from Sun Prairie and James Graham transferred in from University School.
2. Brayden Dailey and Isaac Lindsey (Mineral Point)
These two put on a show last season for Mineral Point. Dailey was the team’s leading scorer as a freshman at 21.3 ppg while Lindsey wasn’t far behind at 18.9 ppg and also serves as the team’s primary facilitator. It’s generally pick your poison with these two on the floor and with Dailey’s versatility and Lindsey’s unlimited range, opponents have a really hard time stopping one, let alone both.
After getting stunned in the Division 4 sectional final by Pardeeville last season, it’s probably state tournament or bust for the Pointers in 2018-19.
3. Marcus Domask and Quintin Winterfeldt (Waupun)
Domask won a state championship as a freshman for Waupun. He’ll be eager to get back as a senior and the addition of Fond Du Lac transfer Quintin Winterfeldt will be major. The Warriors won 24 games last season, but were denied a trip to Madison in the Division 3 sectional final as Domask averaged 22.8 points per game.
Domask is enough to get Waupun back to Madison, but he hasn’t had a running mate like Winterfeldt, who can help take this team to a whole other level. One of the most underrated players in the Fox Valley Association last season, Winterfeldt led the Cardinals with 16.5 ppg and continues to get better and better.
4. Larry Canady and Nobal Days (Racine Park)
Different type of duo here as Canady and Days don’t necessarily play off each other, but instead do different things that helps make Racine Park a complete team. Canady, who averaged 17.0 ppg as a junior, is the team’s primary scorer and one of the best perimeter defenders in the state — if not the best. Days does a little bit of everything. Last season, he led the Panthers in rebounds, assists, and blocks.
Park was one game away from a trip to state last season. Moving to a different sectional in 2018-19, they could be a strong favorite to reach the Kohl Center entering March.
5. Luke Haasl and Karter Thomas (Oshkosh West)
Maybe a surprise pick to some, but these two compliment each other very well and are going to flourish in 2018-19. Haasl is a pick and pop big man who shoot it from long range. That’s perfect for Thomas, who loves to create and make decisions in the pick n’ roll. Opponents want to hedge on Thomas? He’ll kick it back to Haasl for a triple. Go under the screen and stay with Haasl? Thomas is one of the most efficient and deadly 3-point shooters in the state.
Last season, Thomas averaged 16.4 points and 3.0 assists per game. Haasl was a shade under double figures, but had a fantastic spring/summer and should be one of the bigger breakout performers in 2018-19.
Also Considered: Keaton Ferris and Donovan Ivory (Kaukauna), Max Klesmit and Grant Flory (Neenah), Donneil Gray and Troy Reeves (Madison LaFollette), Cade Ellingson and Nick Caropreso (Madison Memorial), Harry Grams and Demetrious Johnson (Whitefish Bay), Kamari McGee and Tyrese Hunter (Racine St. Catherine’s), Steven Clay and Seth Trimble (Menomonee Falls), Jaylon Gentry and Brooklyn Jagers (Brown Deer).
