Prospect Update: Micah Johnson (2020)
A top prospect in Iowa’s 2020 class, 6-foot 8 forward Micah Johnson is a guy that will be showcasing a lot of versatility this season with Centennial.
He’s always been a guy with a penchant for scoring from inside and out, and it’s something he’s been working to further incorporate into his game of late.
“I’ve been working on my ability to stretch the floor and working on my shot, and shooting 3s more consistently,” said Johnson. “That also opens up my game to where I can work on putting the ball on the ground and attacking the basket whenever someone closes out on me hard. And I still can post up, I’ll do that a lot with my school.”
Johnson honed his skills this offseason while playing on the adidas Gauntlet with Iowa Barnstormers Gold 16U.
“The Gauntlet is just insane, there’s so many big teams and so many good players. We really valued moving the ball well and being a solid team overall,” he said. “I worked on not necessarily being the top dog, but just being able to fit in with a lot of other really good players.”
After a successful sophomore season with Centennial — one in which he averaged 7.7 points and a team-best 4.6 rebounds per game — Johnson is eager to get going with his junior season
“I’m going to try and be a lot more aggressive with scoring the ball, but also maintaining my rebounding and being a big factor down there,” said Johnson. “And also I want to be defensively sound, last year I kind of struggled with that, being my first year a lot of people were stronger than me.”
Recruitment-wise, Johnson is seeing a wide-range of interest come his way. He’s got no offers as of right now, but hopes to have some options by this time next season.
“I have a couple of D1s looking at me and then some D2s. It’s looking pretty good, but I’m still looking to improve it, obviously,” said Johnson.
“I’m working really hard to get myself out there. I’ve been invited to some D2 camps and I’m looking to keep progressing and hopefully that will expand even more.”
