Prep Hoops Top 250: Top Slashers (Part 1)
Year 3 of the Prep Hoops Top 250 took place in Florida on Sept. 9.
The 2018 showcase was held at Daytona Mainland High School where a record 220 prospects competed on the day. 12 college programs were on hand with 10 video companies came out for the day.
Here is the first part of the top slashers list.
Rodney Rhoden (Mainland)
On Monday, 2019 guard/forward Rodney Rhoden verbally committed to Long Beach State. A determined athlete who has ridiculous hops, Rhoden is able to block shots defensively often, hit jumpers and drive to the rack with ease. At 6’4″, he’s in for a big senior season at Mainland where the team is ready to make a deep run in Class 7A after losing in the region final this year.
Joe Stubbs (Santa Fe Catholic)
Dunking is always on Joe Stubbs’ mind. The 2020 Santa Fe Catholic is part of a trio of highly skilled juniors at his school. Javon Bell and Ray Davis (mentioned below) all work well with Stubbs and for the most part, Stubbs is the energy guy of the bunch. He’s not the most polished shooter, but you always know he’s on the court. The 6’4″ guard takes defense seriously and is relentless in transition.
Deshawn Jones (Osceola)
On a very deep Osceola group, Deshawn Jones is going to get his chance to prove his worth as a senior. The 2019 6’3″ guard/forward was one of the best inside presences on offense at our showcase. He routinely bullied his way into the paint, drawing fouls, putting back lay-ins and slamming down basketballs. I fully expect Jones to be a key contributor to a state contending Kowboys squad.
Lenzy Hancock (University Christian)
Sound feet and reliable length are what separates Lenzy Hancock. The 2020 University Christian forward is certainly not the quickest guy on the floor, but he doesn’t back down from defenders and loves to use his strength to his advantage inside. The 6’8″ forward can also mix it up as a mid-range shooter. Hancock is in line for a banner junior year for the Christians.
Ray Davis (Santa Fe Catholic)
There is something different about Ray Davis lately. The scrappy 5’11” Santa Fe Catholic guard is driving more to the rim, taking more risks and being more communicative. Always a polished long ball shooter, Davis has played with a purpose lately and he’s maturing into a true point guard. Expect a breakout junior campaign for him.
Ga’khari LaCount (Coral Park)
It is hard to ignore Ga’Khari LaCount at any event. The 2020 Coral Park product continues to show up and make plays. At 6’1″, he uses finesse to score more often than not. A reliable stretch shooter and spot up guy, LaCount creates for himself a lot. Look for him to be a staple on a new look Rams group.
