These rankings will take into consideration both the players next level abilities, but will also rank guys based on who we believe will have the top seasons in 2018-2019. They encompass all classes outside of rising freshmen, and while it’s impossible to include every kid we did the best we could.
Here’s a look at the players ranked 15-6 in the Richmond area, and stay tuned for more content of the same coming up soon.
- Editors Note: These rankings are based on where the kids are slated to play high school basketball this season.
5) Efton Reid | 6’11” C | Steward School 2021
One of the most talented young big men I’ve seen in my five years doing this, Reid is light years beyond most players his age and his size. At 6’11”, he can seal and finish with both hands, scores over both shoulders on the block and has shown the ability to knock down shots out to the three-point line. He’s a good passer and does a good job contesting without leaving his feet, and he’s worked on becoming more mobile and light footed over the past year. He should be a guy who averages a double-double this year for a young but talented Steward School team.
4) Marcellus Avery | 6’6” PF | Life Christian Academy 2020
As talented as anyone on this list, Avery is a nightmare matchup of a four man who can do a little bit of everything. He runs the floor like a gazelle, he can step out and shoot the three ball, he’s an explosive finisher in the paint, he can score in the post with his back to the basket and facing up and he can handle the basketball in transition. His versatile skill set allows him to impact the game in a number of different ways, and he doesn’t shy away as he’ll give you a little bit of everything throughout the game.
3) Jamon Battle | 6’5” WG | LC Bird 2019
Another guy who blew up this summer, Battle is heading into his second season with LC Bird after transferring in from Meadowbrook last year. He’s always been talented, with unbelievable athleticism, but he took a big leap in his ability to understand the game and all the concepts that come with it, and he’s also seen an uptick in confidence throughout the ride. He’s a guy who can really take over games if he gets it going early, and once the energy gets revved up he takes things to another level.
2) Robbie Beran | 6’9” F | Collegiate School 2019
It’s crazy to think that starting last high school season Beran had three collegiate offers, now heading into his senior year at Collegiate he’s sitting on over 40, many of them from Power 6 schools. He took a big leap in his all-around scoring, showing that he can make shots off the catch, take guys out of the triple threat, play above the rim in transition and post up wings as well. He’s also a versatile defender who can guard multiple positions.
1) Henry Coleman | 6’7” F | Trinity Episcopal School 2020
With former high school teammate Armando Bacot gone to spend his senior season at IMG Academy, Coleman is going to be the go-to guy for Trinity and looks like he’s up for the task. The 6’6” wing is bigger and more athletic than almost everyone he matches up with on the wing, and in transition and on the offensive glass he’s very tough to stop. He continues to improve his outside jump shot and ability to play in the half court and if he can get that done he’ll be one of the most productive guys in the state.
