These rankings will take into consideration both the players next level abilities, but will also rank guys based on who we believe will have the top seasons in 2018-2019. They encompass all classes outside of rising freshmen, and while it’s impossible to include every kid we did the best we could.
Here’s a look at the players ranked 15-6 in the Richmond area, and stay tuned for more content of the same coming up soon.
- Editors Note: These rankings are based on where the kids are slated to play high school basketball this season.
15) Mack Burgett | 6’6” F | LC Bird 2019
Burgett had some growing pains last year, but this summer he showed that he should be a very effective player for LC Bird. Without much size he’ll likely be one of their only big men, and with his skill set and length he should be a big mismatch problem. He has a 6’10” wingspan, he can guard multiple positions, runs the floor well and can shoot the basketball from deep.
14) Levar Allen | 6’0” PG | John Marshall 2019
A reigning Class 3 First Team All State selection, Allen was crucial in the Justices’ run to the state championship last year. As one of their only true ballhandlers, he’ll have a lot of his plate from a distribution standpoint and he’ll have to handle pressure throughout the game. He’s a downhill attacking point guard who can finish through traffic and create for others, and he’s set to have a big season for them moving forward.
13) Loginn Norton | 6’0” PG | James River 2019
A Second Team All State Selection in Class 6, Norton was one of the biggest reasons that James River was able to make a run to the state championship just a couple years after being a bottom feeder in the Richmond area. A smooth scoring point guard, Norton can really light it up from deep and has extreme confidence in his ability to shoot the basketball. He can shoot it off the bounce and has a quick release, making him one of the most deadly shooters in the area.
12) Jaden House | 6’3” WG | Henrico 2020
My pick for breakout player of the year in the Richmond area, House had a tremendous summer with River City Reign and should be the go-to guy for Henrico with the departure of last year’s Conference 12 Player of the Year in Timon Jones. At 6’3”, House has the total package as a scorer. He can play on or off the basketball, scores it from everywhere on the court and is a strong and athletic finisher when he gets downhill.
11) DeMarr McRae | 6’2” WG | John Marshall 2019
The energy guy for John Marshall, McRae is an athletic swing man who is the perfect 3 and d guy, but will be asked to do a little bit more for the Justices this season. He’s a super athlete in transition who isn’t afraid to finish above the rim in transition, and he’s a guy who can hit from deep or nail the one or two dribble pull-up in the midrange. He’s also a guy who sets the tone defensively by guarding the best player and brings toughness to his team.
10) Tyler Henderson | 5’8” PG | LC Bird 2020
He may not be the biggest guy out there, but Henderson showed that he can play with pretty much everyone as he started for LC Bird last year and played up with Team Loaded 804 17U where he started this summer. He’s a pesky defender that will hound you throughout the game, and he’s a true floor general that makes everyone better. The addition of an array of floaters and pull-ups in his middle game makes him a threat to score the basketball with the ball in his hands as well.
9) Roosevelt Wheeler | 6’10” PF | John Marshall 2021
His upside is crazy, but with the departure of Isaiah Todd who transferred to Trinity Christian in North Carolina means that Wheeler should see more touches inside where he’ll feast with his size and athleticism. He eats on the glass on both ends of the floor, he protects the rim and he can score over both shoulders on the block. He’s also shown the ability to shoot the midrange jumper, and if he’s aggressive this season he should average a double-double for JM this season.
8) Joe Bamisile | 6’4” G | Monacan 2020
The Richmond native transfers back from Mountverde Academy in Florida, and if he comes ready to play he could be one of the top scorers in the Richmond area at Monacan. At 6’4”, he has good size and athleticism, can play on and off the basketball and has the total package off the bounce. His ability to create and make shots from all three levels with his size should make him a tough matchup for anyone this year.
7) AJ Williams | 6’1” CG | Varina 2021
One of the breakout stars for Varina last year in their state championship run, Williams showed a lot of guts and poise in their run last season. With he departure of Class 5 Player of the Year Tyrese Jenkins, Williams will be looked at to score even more as a sophomore. He’s a knock down shooter from deep, has good wiggle off the bounce and never backed down, even in the biggest of games throughout his freshman year.
6) Elvin Edmonds | 6’2” CG | Hopewell 2021
After averaging 18 points per game as a freshman, Edmonds showed that he’s one of the top scoring combo guards in the area last year. How does he go up from there? He’s been working on his ability as a playmaker off the bounce and has shown the ability to get in the lane off the pick-and-roll and finish through traffic or get to the free throw line. He’s an excellent shooter from deep off the catch and off the bounce, and he’ll be a guy that will have the ball in his hands for much of the year.
