These rankings will take into consideration both the players next level abilities, but will also rank guys based on who we believe will have the top seasons in 2018-2019. They encompass all classes outside of rising freshmen, and while it’s impossible to include every kid we did the best we could.
Here’s a look at numbers 25-16 in the 757 area, and stay tuned for more content of the same coming up soon.
25) Bryson Spell | 6’7” PF | Cape Henry 2021
After transferring to Cape and reclassifying last year, Spell had a solid year last year but was on a team full of upperclassmen and he had a tough time finding his way. This year, he should have a more defined role and will be part of a tough front court that includes Marshall commit Dajour Rucker. With good length and a solid skill set that includes the ability to shoot from behind the arc, Spell could be the perfect mismatch option as a third guy on this group.
24) Josh Talbert | 6’2” G | Kellam 2019
A do-it-all kind of guard who had a terrific junior season at Kellam, Talbert is set to explode this season and show that he’s much more than just a shooter. He has good strength when attacking the rim, he gets off his feet and is able to finish above the rim and he has a solid middle game. He’ll be leaned on to also handle the basketball and defend the best guard on the other team, but it’s what he’s been waiting for the past few seasons.
23) Tim Montgomery | 6’0” PG | Peninsula Catholic 2020
One of the top point guards in the area the last few years, Montgomery reclassified and transferred to Peninsula Catholic from Princess Anne. He joins a crowded backcourt with seniors Titus Lawrence and Malachi Banks, both of which have had success in this program already. Still, Montgomery’s defensive prowess and ability to get other guys easy shots should make him for a seemless transition, and he could be the one that I put far too low on this list.
22) Tyler Chatman | 6’0” G | Kings Fork 2020
After a big summer with Boo Williams, Chatman transfers from Nansemond River to Kings Fork where he should be one of the go-to guys as a fresh face. He has a great understanding of the game, can play on or off the basketball and can do a little bit of everything to help his team. He can shoot the basketball, make plays for others and has a gritty sense about him that should feed off on his teammates.
21) Andre Bottoms | 6’1” PG | Oscar Smith 2020
It’s his third year at Smith, and Bottoms has steadily improved each year and looks ready to take off this season. He’s a ballhawk defensively that will set the tone by picking up the best opponent full court, and he won’t back down no matter how difficult the assignment is. Offensively he can handle pressure and create for others, but is also adept at creating for himself off the bounce and getting to the rim or to the midrange.
20) Caleb Dawkins | 6’2” WG | Grassfield 2019
One of the top shooters in the 757, Dawkins is a guy who can knock it down from deep and really hurt you if you leave him alone. He has limitless range, great mechanics from the feet up and he can shoot it off the catch or off the bounce. He’s a good secondary ball handler as well, and defensively he moves his feet well and can lock up multiple positions.
19) Caleb Butts | 6’4” PF | Deep Creek 2019
Butts is another guy I may regret putting this low because he flat out produces at a high level. At 6’4” he may be a little short, but he’s a strong guy with a high motor in the post and he can outwork bigger guys on both ends of the floor. Offensively, he can take slower big men outside, he can finish with both hands through traffic and he’s great on second and third chance opportunities.
18) Marcus Banks | 6’2” WG | Walsingham 2021
Banks played his second freshman season at Walsingham last year after transferring from nearby Lafayette and reclassifying. He’s in a great situation with returning TCIS POY in senior point guard Jaylin Stewart who should be able to get Banks easy shots. One of the best pure shooters in the state, Banks will provide points in bunches from outside and open driving lanes for other guards.
17) Shawn Walker | 6’3” WF | Bishop Sullivan 2019
The only newcomer on this list in the 757, Walker transfers into Bishop Sullivan from North Carolina and will be their go-to guy this season. At 6’3”, he’s athletic and skilled on the wing, making him a threat both in the half court and in transition to score the basketball. He has decent size, but his athleticism makes him able to rebound and guard multiple positions as well.
16) Matt Nunez | 6’9” C | Woodside 2021
Nunez is still developing somewhat, but he’s already one of the most highly recruited players in the 757 with his massive upside. At 6’9”, he’s very skilled in the post as he has good hands and feet and can score over either shoulder. With another year of development and not much size on the Peninsula to match up with him, expect a breakout year from Nunez moving forward.
