These rankings will take into consideration both the players next level abilities, but will also rank guys based on who we believe will have the top seasons in 2018-2019. They encompass all classes outside of rising freshmen, and while it’s impossible to include every kid we did the best we could.
Here’s a look at numbers 15-6 in the 757 area, and stay tuned for more content of the same coming up soon.
15) Bryan Phillips | 6’0” G | Maury 2019
A strong and physical guard, Phillips is best when he gets downhill because there is really no way to stop him. Defensively he’s opportunistic, jumping passing lanes in the press and forcing bad passes where he can get out in transition and finish. He isn’t the best shooter, but his ability to get in the lane and finish with both hands, along with his toughness, makes him a nightmare to match up with.
14) Jaylin Stewart | 6’2” PG | Walsingham 2019
The reigning TCIS Player of the Year continued his stellar play with TRGR this summer, and is poised to have a huge senior season this year. He has weapons around him, and he’s a guy who’s able to create for himself or for others. He’s another big and strong guard that can get downhill, but he’s also improved immensely in his ability to make shots from the midrange and from deep.
13) Bassirou Diop | 6’7” PF | Great Bridge Christian 2019
The Hampton commit spent last season at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, and will head back to the 757 to play for his former trainer Donald Hand who is the new coach at Great Bridge Christian. At 6’7”, Diop has tremendous length and can run the floor with the guards, and he’s quick and explosive off his feet so he’s able to play above the rim on both ends of the floor. He should be a guy who impacts the game in a number of different ways.
12) Christian Moore | 5’11” PG | Cape Henry 2021
Moore was one of the best players on Cape Henry as a freshman, and is set to take the reigns in the next couple of years. He’s a guy who’s able to shoot it from deep off the catch and off the dribble, so he’s able to play multiple guard positions. He gets hot quickly, has all the intangibles to be a good leader and he has a high IQ of the game.
11) Kendall Bynum | 6’0” PG | Western Branch 2019
After leading his team to the VHSL Class 6 championship last year, the only thing Bynum can do to up his junior campaign is win it. What’s crazy is that with him at the helm that isn’t a far fetched scenario. Bynum has all the qualities you love out of a point guard. He’s tough, he’s smart, he’s a leader and he’s clutch. The guy can get it done as a scorer or a distributor, and he isn’t afraid to stick his nose in and lock up either.
10) Chase Coleman | 5’9” PG | Maury 2019
Coleman enters his fourth year as the starting point guard at Maury, and both the team and him have gotten better every year with him running the show. He isn’t the biggest guy, but he has tremendous feel and vision with the ball in his hands, he plays like a madman on both ends and when he’s hot he can really shoot the basketball. He does all of the little things you want out of a lead guard, and he’ll be the straw that stirs the talented Maury drink this season.
9) Ashley James | 6’2” PG | Green Run 2019
James has had quite the career at Green Run over the past four seasons, and this year should be the best of them all. He’s grown to a long 6’3”, he’s lightning quick and has great body control around the rim where he can contort his body and finish through traffic. He’s also a star defensively, where he can guard multiple positions and is great denying the basketball.
8) Antwan Epps | 5’11” PG | Granby 2019
Back at Granby where he spent his first two seasons, Epps is coming off of a big season at Bishop Sullivan last year. The Hampton commit will be teaming up with his brother, rising freshman sensation Jayden Epps, to make one of the most dynamic backcourts in the 757. The lefty is a smooth scoring guard who can do it from both guard positions, can score from all three levels and can get hot very quickly.
7) Kenan Sarvan | 6’9” PF | Bishop Sullivan 2019
One of the most skilled bigs in the state, the native from Amsterdam is set to be one of the most recruited seniors in the 757. At 6’9”, he can play on the perimeter or inside, is a good passer at the high post and can rebound with the best of them. He can shoot it from deep and score around the basket with both hands as well.
6) Jaylani Darden | 6’3” G | Norview 2021
One of the most productive freshmen in the area last year, Darden is a stat sheet stuffer that had multiple triple-doubles last season. The long combo guard is great in transition where he can use his athleticism to finish at the basket or use his vision to get others easy shots. He can guard multiple positions, helps on the glass from the backcourt and has that alpha dog mentality you love to see out of a young lead guard.
