Open Gym Report: Cathedral
This Fall we are making the rounds, checking in on some of the better teams around the state and trying to keep up on the changes heading towards the high school season. Our open gym looks give us a look at those teams and players with what has changed, what stayed the same, and what to expect. Today, we look at Cathedral.
Additions: Tayshawn Comer (Fr. Guard), Antonio Lisenbee Jr. (Fr. Wing), Peter Moe (Fr. Post)
Losses: Jayden Edwards (Sr. Wing), Jarron Coleman (Sr. Wing)
Returning Players Of Note: Armaan Franklin (Sr. Guard), Ross Welch (Sr. Post), James Franklin (Sr. Guard), Justin Hensley (Sr. Wing), Grant Taueg (Jr. Guard)
Overview: For Cathedral, this is the year where they have to take control and really go for it. They might have had more higher-end, developed talent, but this year it might be a little more balanced and have a few key pieces that could change their dynamic.
While he is only a Freshman, Tayshawn Comer will be a massive help for a team that is looking for a guy to handle the ball and take pressure off Armaan Franklin. Franklin is best playing off the ball and creating with his movement and athleticism so if Comer can pass at a solid level to set him up, this could be a massive year for both.
This group also has a ton of size. Franklin, Hensley, Welch, and Moe are all over 6’5 and then some of their deeper roster types are solid as well. That could help a ton on the defensive end of the court. Moe looked impressive enough that he should impact things pretty early on with his toughness and skill.
There is really only one result that a team like Cathedral will be looking for and that is a State Championship. They have that type of roster and a potential Mr. Basketball candidate that could really go a long way.
Potential Starting Lineup:
Tayshawn Comer – 5’10 G Fr.
James Franklin – 6’0 G Sr.
Armaan Franklin – 6’5 G Sr.
Justin Hensley – 6’5 W Sr.
Ross Welch – 6’6 P Sr.
