Open Gym Notebook: Avon
This Fall we are making the rounds, checking in on some of the better teams around the state and trying to keep up on the changes heading towards the high school season. Our open gym looks give us a look at those teams and players with what has changed, what stayed the same, and what to expect. Today, we look at Avon.
Additions: Wendell DeMyers (Sr. Guard), J.P. Carroll (Sr. Guard)
Losses: Jaylen Jennings (Sr. Post), Travis Sturm (Sr. Post), Zyan Davis (Grad)
Returning Players Of Note: Zach Rinehart (Sr. Post), Jayden Brewer (So. Wing), Jayden Baylor (Sr. Wing), Le’Angelo Saravia (Sr. Guard)
Overview: For Avon, they have to figure out who they are. They have a lot of changes going on, some for the better and some for the worse. The lost of Jaylen Jennings will hurt as he would have provided size and length and would have found some really solid production in their system. Sturm has transferred and Davis is graduated. All three had size and it will really hurt their depth.
However, while those guys are now gone, they do have some significant additions and they should be really high producers in their senior seasons. Both DeMyers and Carroll have the ability to be stars for this team and it wouldn’t surprise in the least if they were the two best players this year for Avon. Take those two and add in Zach Rinehart who has been about as steady as you could hope for, Jayden Brewer who is starting to find his ball handling, and Baylor who replaces some of that size and now you have some solid options on the floor.
Realistically, this team will likely be more of an up and down group as there isn’t a ton of perimeter shooting but a ton of speed, athleticism, and length. Defense should be a priority and transition buckets could come with ease.
If the new guys show leadership and the “team” buys in, this team could do really well. They were 5-20 last year but were kind of a mess. They did seem to pull it together at the end of the year, winning 3 of 5 to end the season.
