Continue ReadingThroughout the next seven days or so, we’ll examine the updated 2019 Prospect Rankings by touching on players from each basketball hotbed in the state: Northwest, Northeast, Central, Dayton, and Cincinnati. The high school season is approaching rapidly, and with that in mind, this seems like the most time-appropriate way to break it down. These kids will be competing for conference and regional championships with each other very soon!
(#54) Jarod Schulze, 6’9” C, Minster
To our knowledge, St. Francis and UNOH continue to be the two schools vying for Schulze’s recruitment. The plodding big is an overwhelming size matchup with enough foot-work and shooting touch to dominate a game inside. He plays with anger and aggressiveness at times. Schulze is also an excellent screener.
(#60) Drew Bench, 6’5” F, Genoa
Bench has remained open to the possibility of playing either basketball or football at the next level, even staying active on the grassroots scene this year with All Ohio Gold. Yet, his recruitment seems to be pulling him to the Division I football ranks. As a hooper, Bench is an athletic specimen who runs the floor and uses physicality to control the defensive glass. Top-notch frame.
(#166) Levi Seiler, 6’4” W/F, Wauseon
There isn’t a player in Northwest Ohio who will have a more unfamiliar situation going into senior year as Seiler. Wauseon has competed for State Championships at the Division II level for the last two seasons, but Seiler is really the only guy remaining from those groups. His versatility and scoring ability will be pushed to new limits by necessity. Seiler looks to be a good D-III kid in our eyes.
(#191) Adam Scott, 6’5” F, Wapakoneta
Scott is an athletically built 6’5” kid with some back-to-the-basket scoring ability who plays hard on the glass. He’ll need to really produce as a senior to turn the heads of colleges. But in our glimpse of catching him, Scott looked worthy of a couple D-III looks. Decent athlete.
(#195) Ashton Caryer, 6’6” F/C, Cardinal Stritch
Caryer is a quality rim-protecting big who uses verticality and athleticism to challenge shots, get put-backs, and rebound. Anyone who jumps like Caryer at 6’6” is going to draw intrigue, and he does have the attention of some local D-IIIs. Nice potential as a utility forward who appears to do exactly what’s asked of him on the floor.
(#200) Grant Sonnenberg, 6’6” F, Toledo St. Francis
Sonnenberg has flown under the radar on a Toledo St. Francis team who has flashier prospects that distract from his ability. We like Sonnenberg’s tools, though, and see him as a real option for D-IIIs trying to find size. He may be pretty thin, but it yields a good first step on straight-line drives. He may be inconsistent as a finisher, but that often comes with time and he does get to his spots. There’s a little something there for this kid and with the Knights bringing back a strong crew for 2018-19, he’ll have opportunities to prove himself under the bright lights.
