Continue ReadingThroughout the next seven days or so, we’ll examine the updated 2019 Prospect Rankings by touching on players from each basketball hotbed in the state: Northwest, Northeast, Central, Dayton, and Cincinnati. The high school season is approaching rapidly, and with that in mind, this seems like the most time-appropriate way to break it down. These kids will be competing for conference and regional championships with each other very soon!
ICYMI: Yesterday we started off with Northwest Ohio Point Guards, Guards/Wings, and Forwards.
(#12) Lunden McDay, 6’3” G/W, St. Vincent-St. Mary
If STVM is going to replicate their playoff success at the Division I level this season, McDay will need to be as good as we think he is. He’s a basketball purist’s favorite player in that he’s principled, impacts the game on both ends, and his decision-making hardly ever falters. McDay also has exciting length for a prospect. The Ohio commit has continued to become more explosive and effective as a shooter. A year ago at this time, McDay was hardly in the top 75 in this class.
(#31) Brandon Haraway, 6’2” G, Norwalk
Haraway had a really unique grassroots basketball career, eventually leading to a commitment to Ashland in August. As a rising junior, Haraway flew under the radar on NEO Shooting Stars. Although his athleticism, power, and lateral quickness popped, Haraway wasn’t playing on a high-profile team. Then, he went the opposite direction and played for C2K this season. In spot minutes, those same defensive tools impressed but Haraway was a true role player.
Throughout it all, Haraway did his job continuously. While ball-handling and playmaking ability remain a question mark, the kid has tremendous strengths and is ranked near the top of our D-II tier.
(#34) Jayson Woodrich, 6’5” G/W, Beachwood
One of the best shooters in Ohio, Woodrich will likely head the junior college route because of grades. Regional low-major and D-II programs, though, should keep an eye peeled on his development in that time. He has unrelenting confidence from deep, hardly ever seeing a shot within 30 feet he doesn’t like. As he brushes up on grades, shot selection (just a little bit, we like his aggressiveness), and his body, Woodrich will be highly pursued.
(#55) Trent Williams, 6’0” G, Solon
In Tiffin and St. Michael’s College (VT), Williams is finally pulling in the Division II offers he deserves. He has a pair of clear strengths, both of which are kind of important in the game of basketball. First of all, Williams has an excellent outside jumper, especially on the catch. He converted 97 of 213 (45 percent) 3-point attempts last year, scoring 18.4 PPG. Considering that level of volume, that number is insane.
Also, Williams is an elite on-ball defender who should be used against the other team’s best guard. He has a strong frame and is able to get his hands in to cause steals often. Really good lateral quickness. In-state Division II programs who aren’t recruiting Williams, you’re overthinking this one. Get up to Solon before it’s too late.
(#71) Kyle Goessler, 6’2” G, Brunswick
Goessler is a high-academic recruit who found a really good fit with Hillsdale in the middle of the July Live Period. With running mate Zak Zografos off the college, it will be interesting how competitive Goessler will keep Brunswick. He has really developed as an off-the-dribble scorer and his outside shooting consistency is one of the best in this class.
(#73) Demetrius Terry, 6’1” G, St. Edward
A bit of an up-and-down summer for Terry seems to have stalled his recruitment in an unexpected way. Considering he was outstanding as St. Edward’s sixth man last season, he should get his mojo back pretty quickly come December. The explosive combo guard is known for his highlight dunks in traffic and beating people off the dribble. We’re excited to see him expand on that package of skills this season.
