Minnesota-Crookston Lands Winterfeldt
A year ago, Quintin Winterfeldt was still a hidden gem. Flying under the radar in the Fox Valley Association, Winterfeldt wasn’t on many, if any collegiate radars, despite leading Fond Du Lac in scoring.
Following a breakout spring and summer on the AAU circuit with the Wisconsin Blizzard, Winterfeldt has played his way into becoming a scholarship player. Monday night, Winterfeldt ended his recruitment, opting to commit to Division 2 Minnesota-Crookston.
“A couple other schools came in late, but I decided that Minnesota-Crookston was the best fit for me,” Winterfeldt told Prep Hoops Wisconsin. “They were there from the get go. The coaches are really good people and I just wanted to focus on my senior season.”
Winterfeldt will take an official visit to Minnesota-Crookston the weekend of Oct. 6. He previously took an unofficial visit over the summer.
“The trip was really nice,” he said. “They have a really nice campus. It’s very homey. Just a nice, quiet place and that’s something I’m really into.”
Winona State, St. Cloud State, Illinois-Springfield, and Minnesota-Moorehead were also expressing interest in Winterfeldt.
Locking down Winterfeldt before other schools could get a further evaluation during the season, the Eagles think they may have a centerpiece in their 2019 recruiting class.
“They were really happy,” said Winterfeldt. “They really wanted me. They believe I could become a really good player.
“They see me being a core element to their team and fitting in as one of their main players.”
As a junior, Winterfeldt, who transferred to Waupun for his senior season, averaged 16.5 points per game as a junior. Joining a Warrior team that went 24-2 last season and enters 2018-19 as one of the favorites to win the Division 3 state championship, Winterfeldt will join forces with the state’s No. 2 ranked senior, Marcus Domask, and can put his sole focus on winning a gold ball now that the weight of his recruitment is off his shoulders.
“It’s really amazing,” said Winterfeldt. “Putting in all the hard work, it’s just a blessing overall. I’m excited to get it off my chest.”
