2022 Montverde G Dariq Whitehead talks summer ball, recruitment and more
Montverde always has top notch athletes.
Dariq Whitehead certainly fits the bill.
The younger brother of Oakland Raiders linebacker Tahir Whitehead, Dariq played for the Montverde national team as an 8th grader a year ago. Although it was sparingly that is an impressive feat after he came down from New Jersey.
The 6’5″ guard/forward reminisced about his first year with Montverde and looked ahead to this fall.
“I saw a lot of improvements in my game going from not being able to shoot the ball well to now being able to shoot the ball very well,” Whitehead told Prep Hoops. “This upcoming year I’m excited to get on the floor with my team and compete for a national championship.”
This summer, Whitehead played for the NY Jayhawks on the Adidas Circuit.
“It was an amazing experience. Playing on the gold 16U division for coach Prophet Kates & Teddy Mitchell I learned a lot. They helped me get better in areas where I was weak,” he said. “Me being 14 years old I have seen the speed and physicality of the game change once I played up but I was able to hold my own.”
Entering his freshman season, Whitehead already holds six Division I offers from Arkansas Little Rock, Rutgers, Seton Hall, USC, West Virginia and LSU.
He says he hears from Seton Hall and Rutgers the most since he was a top prospect in that area for a long time.
Whitehead is looking to improve on being consistent throughout the season and all the little things defensively. He says he needs to just keep getting better each and every day.
Dunking as a 13-year-old last summer, Whitehead put his name on the map early. At Montverde, he is expected to play a larger role and that should pay dividends to his all-around game. He’s on the fast track for success and it looks like he could be an absolute stud as soon as his freshman season ends. Whitehead is a joy to watch with his mix of speed, size and pure athleticism.
