Big Year Ahead
Not a lot has been accomplished yet by this group of young high school standouts; but eventually, these guys will be winning state titles, earning scholarship offers and earning the accolades that will define their school legacies. They’ll take a huge step in that process this winter during their sophomore high school seasons. Most of these guys played minimally, if at all with their program’s varsity teams last season, a lot of them will be shot into much more key roles this season. And after that, they’ll head into a 16U grassroots season where the recruitment will certainly begin to ramp up. It’ll be an exciting and eye-opening next 12 months for this Class of 2021.
Big School Prowess
A lot of times, when the initial prospect rankings for a class are released, there tends to be an inordinate amount of small school guys at the top. It takes the big school guys a little longer to emerge as standouts. Not with this class, though. Of the top 11-ranked guys, nine of them come from Class 4A schools. Only two, Iowa Falls-Alden’s Karson Sharar and Bishop Garrigan’s Angelo Winkel come from small schools.
All Sub 6-foot Team
It’s no secret that basketball, probably more than any other sport, is a game where height is taken into consideration. This class of prospects, like all the others, and even at such a young age, predominately features guys who are over 6-foot tall. There are some smaller guys that we hold in high regard though, here’s the All-Sub 6-foot Team.
No. 11 Malik Allen (5’9) , No. 12 Nathaniel Mueller (5’7), No. 17 Trey Shearer (5’10), No. 22 Cam Davis (5’10), No. 27 Casey Mumm (5’10)
Dynamic Duos
Like with any other class, we quite a few dynamic duos emerging. One duo headlining the best tandems is Johnston back-court combo of Reid Grand and Karter Kriegl. Below, we’ll highlight the rest of the duos that are featured in the prospect rankings.
Johnston: Reid Grant (5), Karter Kriegl (25)
Waukee: Payton Sandfort (3), Tucker DeVries (26)
Cedar Falls: Chase Courbat (1), Joe Knutson (36)
Hempstead: Michael Duax (6), Cam Davis (22)
Des Moines North: Malik Allen (11), Diondre Taylor (42)
Montezuma: Trey Shearer (17), Cole Watts (59)
Davenport North: Jayden Houston (27), Quincy Wiseman (39)
Southeast Polk: Dominic Caggiano (21), James Glenn (51)
Martin Bros may or may not have been the best 15U team in the state last spring and summer (Kingdom Hoops and All Iowa Attack were really good, too), but if these rankings are any indicator, they had the most elite talent on their roster. Not only do they have the state’s current No. 1, Chase Courbat, but four of the top 10-ranked guys are are Martin Bros guys. Here’s how the the top 25 breaks down: Martin Bros 7, All Iowa Attack 5, Kingdom Hoops 5, Barnstormers 2, Pure Prep 1, Beyond Ball 1, N/A 3.
