2019 Wing Stock Risers
Let’s dive into the biggest wing stock risers in the 2019 class. These are the shooting guards and small forwards that made the biggest leap in the latest rankings.
Ryland Holt (Gibson City)
Previous Ranking: #82
Current Ranking: #25
Holt was the talk of July! The 6’5” small forward from Gibson City was outstanding for the Illinois Irish from start to finish being a major force in their three week run! He impressed with his position versatility along with his ability to shoot the basketball. Plus perimeter jumper along with the athleticism to finish at the rim.
LJ Johnson (Kenwood)
Previous Ranking: NR
Current Ranking: #30
Johnson is a prospect that is jumping back in the rankings after moving out of state. Played at a couple different high schools last year in the south and west, but is now back at Kenwood. Johnson displayed with Young & Reckless he has a super high motor and off the charts athleticism.
Chistopher Burnell (Rockford East)
Previous Ranking: #53
Current Ranking: #35
Burnell is a powerful bowling ball type shooting guard that had a productive July running with the Illinois Stars. He was prolific throughout Summer Jam each time we saw him scoring from all three levels. Plays with a consistent motor.
Jamir Price (Rock Island)
Previous Ranking: #54
Current Ranking: #36
Price is a two guard from Rock Island that with DJ Carton not in attendance during the first live period he was able to play on the ball more and proved to be a playmaker. He was looking to get downhill and to the rim. Did just that with slick drives and acrobatic finishes at the cup. Also mixed in some nice passing when he drew multiple defenders as he was more than willing to give it up to his big fellas. Sound perimeter shooter pulling up from mid-range especially.
Donovan Clay (Alton)
Previous Ranking: #59
Current Ranking: #37
The Alton wing is 6’6” with long arms and can shoot it from deep. Projects as a classic three and D guy at the next level. Ability to defend multiple positions and is a plus shooter from beyond the arc. Clean looking stroke from three. Also mixed in some more drives and transition scores during July for Ramey-Jets United.
Deonte Billups (Moline)
Previous Ranking: #104
Current Ranking: #38
Billups returned to QCE and he showed growth since we saw him in the spring with the Fire. The Moline two guard played about as hard as we have seen him during his career in July. He was super active on the offensive glass with his second jump. Got a handful of put backs. Also mixed some threes off the catch and takes to the rack. Much more efficient than previous.
Mitch Mascari (Geneva)
Previous Ranking: #106
Current Ranking: #43
We hadn’t seen the Geneva shooting guard play in a while and he was impressive with Mercury Elite in July. He has gotten taller and a lot stronger. He is a smooth scoring wing that likes to attack off the bounce and score on athletic drives to the cup. He did that on a regular basis. Converted tough layups. Moves well without the ball including scoring on back cuts.
Cortez Mosley (Peoria Richwoods)
Previous Ranking: #182
Current Ranking: #50
Mosley was ready for a primetime breakout performance at the PrepHoops Summer Challenge and that is what he did when we saw him. He is a big and athletic wing that has freaky bounce! Plays so hard on both ends of the floor. He is definitely at his best in the open floor and driving to the hoop. Finishes well. Hit an occasional mid-range jumper and made several nice passes.
Anthony Roberts (OPRF)
Previous Ranking: #260
Current Ranking: #70
Roberts is a prospect that intrigued us with his play during July with Made Men. The combo forward is a bit of a tweener, but in today’s game that isn’t always a bad thing. Good strength and frame along with plus athleticism. Handles the ball well slashing to the hoop with a burst along with being able to finish through traffic. Jump shot is a bit streaky, but definitely much improved from the spring.
Dylan Engler (Oswego)
Previous Ranking: #268
Current Ranking: #82
Engler was the breakout performer at the Spartz Basketball Invite Day. The 6’4” wing from Oswego put his complete game on display. Was consistent shooting it from beyond the arc hitting threes from the wings. Connected both off the catch and pulling up from deep. His shot was about on point as you can get. Played well in transition and showed more athletic pop than we had seen in the past including an explosive baseline take for a slam.
Sam Silverstein (New Trier)
Previous Ranking: #128
Current Ranking: #87
Silverstien is a versatile wing with some size. He is a quality athlete that showed burst with the ball off the bounce and finished well around the hoop. Displayed with Fundamental U how his versatility plays well as a role player, but also has some developmental upside.
