Who’s About to Blow Up? (Part II)
Any follower of the Prep Hoops brand knows that basketball is a year-round endeavor these days. And we at Prep Hoops Iowa are there for it all. The off-season grassroots tourneys, summer high school camps and exposure events oftentimes give us a sneak peak into what in-state talent will surface the next high school season. Below, we’ll take a look at some guys that have been standouts in the offseason, and will likely see their star brighten this high school season.
Tamin Lipsey, 6’1 G (Ames) — 2022
In rare cases, guys from Iowa will pick up big-time offers before they even step foot in a high school classroom, such is the case for Ames soon-to-be freshman Tamin Lipsey. Local university Iowa State offered the skilled, long and athletic guard after Lipsey performed exceedingly well at the Cyclones’ team camp in June. He should be able to come in and make a big impact right away with the Little Cyclones.
Hosea Treadwell, 6’2 G (Hoover) — 2019
It’s been an up and down career for the Hoover guard, he was one of a few freshman in the state to make an impact on a 4A team three years ago. Two years ago, as he headed into what was a promising sophomore season, he suffered an ACL injury and was sidelined all winter. Last year, he was back, but still trying to find his groove again. This summer he was exceptional with Kingdom Hoops Elite, and we expect him to be an all-state caliber performer for the Huskies this winter.
Jack Keough, 6′ PG (Dowling) — 2019
The Maroons have had some very talented point guards come through the ranks over the past few seasons; Keough was playing behind and learning from Joey Kern and Sam Ingoli, two high-level CIML floor generals. Now, Keough, a bulky 6-foot floor general will be leading the charge, and if his performance at the Drake Team Camp is any indicator, he’ll be hard to handle this season for anyone who attempts to guard him.
Malik Allen, 5’8 PG (Des Moines North) — 2021
Last season, Allen made his mark with the Polar Bears by averaging 5.3 points on 49 percent shooting. He’s been preparing for his sophomore season all summer by playing with Beyond Ball 15U, and was very good when we saw him at Battle of the Lakes in May. Allen will come into his sophomore season with confidence and will be instrumental to helping the Polar Bears become a state tourney-caliber team once again.
Chase Courbat, 6’9 PF (Cedar Falls) — 2021
Cedar Falls is fresh from a 2018 Class 4A state title, and although Courbat contributed minimally last season as a freshman (1.6 points per game), you can bet that he’ll be a main component this season as a sophomore. The Tigers will again be among the favorites to win a 4A title, and Courbat will be a big reason why.
Reid Grant, 6’3 G (Johnston) — 2021
Grant had a big spring and summer as a leading scorer for one of Iowa’s most exciting grassroots teams, Kingdom Hoops Elite 15U. Now, he heads into a sophomore season at Johnston, where he’ll take the experience of role-playing freshman from a season ago, and apply it to key-player sophomore this winter.
Tyler Andrews, 6’3 G/F (Kennedy) — 2020
After spending his first two seasons at Linn-Mar, Andrews has made the switch to Kennedy, where he’ll be part of an exciting group of talent this season. Expect the long and athletic wing to make an immediate major impact with the Cougars. He’ll provide some above the rim thrills and will also step out and can a 3-ball, defensively his height and length should case fits fro opponents.
Zach Carr, 5’10 G (Glenwood) — 2020
Carr was instrumental during Glenwood’s amazing run to the 3A state title last season, coming off the bench to provide a spark throughout the tourney. This season, as a junior, he’ll look to have a much-increased role with a Rams team that we have ranked No. 4 in our Way Too Early Top 10: 3A.
