Continue ReadingBeaver pulled off quite the run in the state tournament as they took down the state title favorite en route to collecting a title. Despite losing in the final four last season, Layton Christian Academy is the favorite to win it all once again. Further, they are joined at the top by another private school in Rowland Hall.
1. Layton Christian Academy
Layton Christian was favored to win the state championship last year prior to Beaver upsetting them in the final four and eventually winning the state title. While LCA will be talented this year as well, they will have to win the state title without one of their toughest players to guard from last year’s team in Sano Gasana.
While Gasana is gone, the team will have Braxton Meah to lead the team in scoring. Meah will have a lot of responsibility on his plate. He will but looked up to a lot but will have assistance with Lino Saez, Micah Petty, and Sam Mueller. There will be a lot of room for production with Gasana gone and this team has the pieces to handle it.
2. Rowland Hall
Jack Dischman graduating will have an impact on this team’s success. However, they have plenty of young prospects from last year returning who are ready to make a huge impact. Isaiah Adams was a double-double machine despite his youth. With another year of experience under his belt, he will be even more mature and ready to make a huge impact.
In addition to Adams, Rowland Hall will have Trey Provost who was the second leading scorer and leader in assists this past season. Provost is a playmaker who makes those around him better. He will look to facilitate to Adams as well as knockdown shooter Zach Smith.
3. Parowan
Parowan, like North Summit, will bring back their leading scorer from last year. Porter Wood was exceptionally tough to guard due to his ability to score the basketball from all three levels on the floor. Wood will need to score the basketball well and crash the glass much like he did last year in order for Parowan to live up to this ranking as well as exceed it.
He won’t have much returning experience from last year other than Max Topham. Topham contributed at a high level for a Freshman. However, he will need to be even more productive as he will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders. His ability to play at an even higher level as a sophomore will be essential to Parowan’s success.
4. North Summit
Like the rest of the teams on this list, North Summit will have some key players to replace. However, unlike most of the teams on this list, they will return their two leading scorers from last year. Hayden Blonquist filled up the stat sheet for this team last year as he led them in scoring, rebounds, and steals. Blonquist plays with an exceptional motor and will be tough for opposing teams to guard.
Parker Brown provided the team with a shooter who could extend the floor and make it even tougher for teams to guard Blonquist. His ability to shoot the basketball from deep will once again be vital to the team’s success. This group got a small taste of success after making it to the 2nd round of the state tournament last year. Look for them to push further this year.
