After a hectic but productive summer, it allowed us to get a better feel on the players in the Maryland/D.C. area. For this series of articles, I’ll break down the prospects from the Baltimore area who made the list, taking a look at the prospects who appeared from 51-75.
TJ Thomas | 6’2 | Patterson/Team BBC
Ranking: 54
Thomas is more of an under-the-radar prospect in the area considering his skill set at the point guard position. The 6-foot-2 floor general is solid in all of the categories you need from your point guard. Thomas is a capable three-point shooter, dynamic off the dribble and has good vision when he gets into the paint. He guards the ball well defensively, but that’s also an area where he could improve. He’ll play a vital role in Patterson’s success this season.
Jalen Willis | 6’4 | Patterson/Team Melo
Ranking: 55
Willis was the key transfer for Patterson this summer coming from Joppatowne. The 6-foot-4 guard is the definition of a bruiser. Willis is strong and embraces physicality in every aspect. He is most valuable on the defensive end being a pest on the ball and anticipating in the passing lanes well when playing off the ball. He is an above average rebounder and overall hustle player. His biggest weakness is his jump shot. Offensively, all of his buckets come around the rim either off the drive or moving without the ball.
Malik McCormick | 6’0 | Dunbar/Team Thrill
Ranking: 67
McCormick is a dual-sport athlete who made his mark on the hardwood last season for Dunbar as they captured the 1A state title. The 6-foot combo guard is most effective shooting from outside. Last season, he played alongside Da’Shawn Phillip, who was able to create open shots for McCormick off his ability to get into the paint. McCormick can score in bunches and on top of his ability to shoot, he has become much improved off the dribble. Defensively, he’s above average on the ball. He works hard, makes his match up turn multiple times when dribbling up the court and has active hands.
Anthony Carpenter | 5’10 | Gerstell/Crusader Nation
Ranking: 74
Carpenter had a solid spring/summer for Crusader Nation as the primary scorer from the guard spot. An efficient shooter from three, Carpenter has improved his basketball IQ as a creator off the dribble with the ball being in his hands so much. For Gerstell this season, you’ll likely see Carpenter play more off the ball as a two-guard. The 5-foot-11 guard is a decent on-ball defender, but will have to improve for the collegiate level. Carpenter has around a dozen Division III programs tracking him.
