Region 1 had a lot of depth last year. While they will have a lot of newcomers who will play big roles, there is still plenty of returning talent. It will be interesting to see all the new faces and prospects who compete at a high level. However, Fremont, Davis, and Layton sit atop of this pack early on due to their proven returners.
This region will be competitive despite a lot of new faces taking over prominent roles at the varsity level. With that said, there is no question that Fremont has a jump start on the competition as they had success last season. Further, they bring back many key members from that team’s successful season.
The top prospect to watch is without a doubt Dallin Hall. Hall is one of the top playmakers in this region as well as in the state. He will be a handful for the opposing team to slow down. Hall makes good decisions with the basketball and puts a lot of pressure on help side due to his willingness to pass.
In addition to Hall, Baylor Harrop is yet another young prospect who can score the basketball at will. Behind Hall and Harrop, Fremont has one of the top backcourts in the entire state. These two will be looking for other prospects to step up in order for them to reach their proximal growth. However, these two are enough to do damage.
Davis has a tradition of excellence in basketball. Thus, even when they lose skilled prospects to graduation, it is always a forgone conclusion that they will refill instead of rebuild. In addition to having many prospects to fill in gaps, they have the advantage of also bringing back two players who have demonstrated that they are able to have success at the varsity level.
Tyson Garff will be one of the leading scorers in the state due to his ability to score the basketball from all three levels. He is a knockdown shooter from deep who is not afraid to let it fly. He will have help from an undersized big man who his versatile and plays with a tremendous motor. Brendon Redford will lead this team in toughness and rebounding. His contributions will be crucial to Davis making this ranking stick or finding a way to finish atop Fremont.
Layton is one of the most intriguing teams in this region as they lost a lot of experience and depth last year. However, they bring back one of the top bigs in the state in Collin Jeppson. Jeppson controls the paint for Layton.
Defensively, he rotates well and protects the rim. Further, he is a skilled rebounder who aids Layton in getting out of possessions and not giving up second chance points. On the offensive end, Jeppson crashes the glass well and has a soft touch around the rim. He will need to play an even bigger role offensively in order to ensure that this team has success.
