Recruiting Report: Treyton Mattern (2019)
Treyton Mattern turned in one of the best performances of his career in the state title game last year, helping Bismarck Century capture the Class A championship with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. If he showed anything this summer, it’s that he’s capable of a lot more of those kinds of games.
Mattern, a 6-foot guard, spent the grassroots season with ECI Prospects, where he had a chance to play with some of the top talent in North Dakota while honing his game against top-shelf competition throughout the midwest.
“I thought it was a very good summer for both my team and I,” Mattern said. “Unfortunately I couldn’t play in as many tourneys as I would have liked due to injury but it was a good summer. I thought I got better as the summer went on. Right away I was a little rusty and got more comfortable as I played in more tournaments. We played some really good teams with good players and I benefited from that a lot.”
There’s a lot to like about Mattern’s game. He contributes to winning basketball without needing to pour in points because of the way he defends, rebounds, distributes and controls the tempo. He’s a solid 3-point shooter, has a creative mid-range game and court awareness to make his teammates better.
“I am always trying to improve my game whether it is ball handling or shooting, or shooting off the dribble,” said Mattern. “Defensively; trying to get faster and stronger. There is always something to work on and I try to never settle.”
Mattern’s got no shortage of suitors at the college level as his game should allow him to contribute and excel in a lot of different roles.
“The recruitment process is going well,” said Mattern. “As of now I am talking to University of Mary and Minot State.”
