Recruiting Report: Robbie Beran (2019)
To say that Robbie Beran‘s stock went up this summer is certainly true, but probably a bit of an understatement. Since the April live period, he has received over 25 division one scholarship offers. Beran is now listed as a top-100 prospect by most recruiting services, but he’s hungry and still improving. During a recent interview with Prep Hoops, he discussed a variety of topics, including his transition to the next level, short and long-term goals, and the key factors he is considering in his decision.
PH: For those who haven’t seen you play, could you describe the things you’ve worked on specifically to get to where you are right now as a player?
RB: “For someone who hasn’t seen me play, I’d like to describe myself as someone who plays the new era of positionless basketball. I just try to impact the game as much as possible. Whatever is needed to win; that’s what I’ll do. Whether it be to score, find my teammates, get a rebound and go coast to coast or grab a board and throw a full court “K-Love” outlet. Right now, I’m looking to get my footwork more consistent which will help refine movements; and getting my handles tighter.”
PH: What is the most underrated part of your game?
RB: “This is something that I can’t really pinpoint. I think I’ve been an under-the-radar type guy for however long I’ve been playing. So just to play with that chip even more so now. Because people will try to come at me every play. That’s something that was done this past summer, and I don’t back down. I guess maybe the most underrated part would be how I use my body. Just because I might not pass the initial eye test. So I like to surprise people. Get up and block a shot at the rim or throw one down on the other end.”
PH: What was the best piece of coaching advice you’ve received and who was it from?
RB: “There are a lot of things coach Scoop (Ervin) and I talk about. He pushes me every time out there, and I’ve learned a lot from him. I think the best advice he’s probably given me is to play with a high motor on every possession. Just can’t take any plays off, and I think I’m starting to get that.”
PH: Describe Coach Del Harris in an AAU vs. a HS setting
RB: “He’s a passionate guy. That’s really the best way I think I can describe him. But it’s been cool to see how he utilizes different personnel between the group we have for AAU and at Collegiate. Going into the fourth season playing for him we’ve basically had a unique style every season.”
PH: How are your grades right now? Have you taken the SAT?
RB: “Right now I’m sitting right about at a 4.0 with a 1220 on my SAT.”
PH: What are your short and long term goals?
RB: “My biggest thing is just getting better everyday. For me, I think it’s okay to be pleased with a performance, but never satisfied. Obviously I know I need to get bigger and stronger to be able to be successful at the next level, but that just takes time. Short term skill development goals are to tighten my handles. Improve my jump shot so it doesn’t matter if I shoot off the catch, dribble, or jab/shot fake. One of my longer term goals is to be in shape during the season so I’m able to play the whole game at a high level without taking a play off. That’s why this off-season I’ve just been pushing myself to points I really haven’t been to. I don’t really tend to worry about personal accolades but the plan is to be POY, and then win a state chip for Collegiate. I need to keep on working, but looking forward to it.”
PH: What factors are important to you when considering schools?
RB: “Really I’m just trying to find the overall best fit. I guess that’s just the most simple way to put it. there are a lot of factors when making a decision like this, but the main areas would be academically, socially, and then obviously basketball.”
PH: How do you see yourself fitting in at the next level?
RB: “I think I could see myself as someone who can have an immediate impact at the next level. A 4/3 type guy; able to provide versatility. Similar to my role now, just at a different level. I believe that’d translate pretty well; just being me and playing my game. That’s something I’ve just been in constant contact with coaches about.”
