Recruiting Report: Matt Wyffels (2019)
Length and ability to stretch the floor while playing tough versatile defense. That’s what the game of basketball is turning into, and Centennial’s Matt Wyffels fits the bill.
The 6-foot-5 forward was a consistent deep threat and was depended on to guard positions 1 through 5 while playing with Minnesota Heat Nelson the past couple grassroots seasons, cumulating in a top 10 17U rank this summer. Matt has nothing but positive light to shed on the experience. “I think we surprised a lot of people. One of the best parts was winning the NHR State Tournament,” he said.
Now the focus turns to winter, as Wyffels and Centennial had a disappointing 2017-18 but return lots of minutes and improved skills. “We were very young last year,” he said. “But we return four starters and are hoping to flip our record around and make a tough run in our section and conference.”
To help the Cougars, Wyffels has done what was mentioned at the top of the article: shoot and guard. “I think I’ve become a more consistent shooter and a tough defender. I am working on becoming a better post player and finisher around the rim because I will be one of the biggest guys on my high school squad,” he explained.
After a summer of playing consistent two-way hoops around the Midwest, multiple high-academic D3s are in contact with Wyffels. “Some schools that I have been talking to include Carleton, University of Chicago, St. Olaf, Macalester and Rose-Hulman.”
