Folks around the Minnesota high school hoops circuit have always recognized the grit and energy Jason Kaul brings to the table. Now college programs are getting in the mix for both basketball and football as he enters his senior campaign at Blaine.
The Bengals again had a solid season in 2017-18 and are constantly a threat to win section 7AAAA. Kaul says that will carry on this year too. “Blaine will be losing 5 seniors from last year but will have 2 returning starters including myself,” the 6-foot-4 forward said. “We still have big expectations as we have a solid senior class coming in that has been playing together since traveling ball. We’ve got lots of talent and heart, and with some good leadership can have a really successful season.”
Kaul spent multiple years in the MN Crossfire grassroots program and his experience was second to none, especially off the court. “This past AAU season with Crossfire has been very memorable. We won the Spring Jam tourney in Sioux Falls which was a lot of fun,” he said. “But most memorable was the relationships I made with my teammates. Coach Nathan Bellefeuille has also been a great mentor to me and worked to develop my skills as a player.”
He’s known as a tenacious rebounder and underrated low post player for his size; no doubt the Northwest Suburban will need to keep an even sharper eye on his play. “I think I’ve definitely improved on the defensive side of the ball being able to get a stop, grab the rebound, and transition back to offense,” Kaul explained. “I’ve also improved on being able to lead my team with my energy and communication on the floor. I am continuing to work on ball handling and my overall confidence as a player.” With the limited varsity experience returning, Jason will be counted on for that energy boost.
As previously stated, many schools have been in pursuit of Kaul’s abilities, on the hardwood and the gridiron. Though the Division 1 interest is there for football, he’s more intent on the hoops option. “As of right now for basketball, I’ve been getting mostly Division 3 looks from MIAC and UMAC schools. I’ve gotten the most communication from St. Olaf, Northwestern-St. Paul, Gustavus, and Bethany Lutheran. I’ve also gotten some looks for football as well such as UND and SDSU, but feel my passion is for basketball.”
