Recruiting Report: Charles Johnson (2019)
It didn’t take Charles Johnson long to make a mark in his first season with the Comets.
Johnson, a 6-foot guard from Minneapolis Washburn, wasn’t super familiar with a lot of his teammates right away this summer. He found a way to impact the game as a point guard without that built in chemistry right away with his defensive effort and tempo-pushing style.
“It was a really good summer,” said Johnson. “I think we got better and better as the season went on. We finished 6-1 in Vegas. It was great to play with those guys; a great experience. I hadn’t played with any of them before the season so I had to get used to it.”
Johnson is one of the best defensive guards in the state and routinely made a big impact on that end of the floor, applying constant full court pressure and using his athleticism and strength to disrupt opposing ball handlers throughout the summer. Johnson’s ability to push the tempo and either find teammates or press the issue himself was also on full display during the AAU season.
“I think I definitely helped defensively,” Johnson said. “Talking, communicating, rebounding and pushing the ball is a strength of mine. I want to improve as a perimeter shooter. It was really fun pushing the ball and just changing the game even without scoring. Getting players open looks. I played with a lot of good scorers. It was a ton of fun.”
Johnson certainly shouldn’t lack for college suitors as his low-maintenance and high energy style of play make him an ideal piece and easy fit in practically any program.
“Right now been talking to Jamestown a little bit,” said Johnson. “That’s the only one I’m really talking to a lot at the moment. I don’t really have a timetable for when I want to commit. We’ll see what happens during my senior year. Whenever I feel comfortable, I’ll make a decision.”
