Recruiting Report: Anthony Sayles (2021)
Anthony Sayles is the top 2021 point guard in the state of Illinois. He has electric speed in the open floor. Pushes the pace and has also developed over the spring and summer into being able to run a team in the half court. The Niles Notre Dame lead guard can score off the bounce as well as being effective off the ball as a wing scorer at times. Like what he brings defensively with his lateral quickness, anticipation, and active hands.
Sayles talked with PHI about his run with the Illinois Wolves 15U this past summer.
“I think July is going great as a team. We have been beating some really good teams and good competition. A couple games have got stopped from winning by so much.”
He was a key part in leading the Wolves to a huge tournament win in Atlanta during the first live period.
“It was a great experience. I am glad they put us in that tournament. It showed us that we can win on the big stage without Max (Christie) and with Max we are dominant.”
How does he think he is playing?
“I think I am playing pretty well. I am sharing and scoring. Setting my guys up.”
He told us a few areas where his game has improved.
“Probably my ball handling and IQ. Before it was shaky. I feel I have upped by IQ.”
Sayles also spent time this summer getting in the gym with his high school team at Niles Notre Dame during June.
“I think it went good. We played a pretty tough schedule in the summer league. I think we are going to be good during the high school season. We have to get everything together. We have a young team. We lost a few pieces.”
What is going on with recruiting?
“It is pretty interesting right now. I got an offer from UW-Milwaukee and Coach Baldwin. I went on two unofficials to Purdue and Illinois.”
Illinois is a Big 10 program that he checked out in recent months.
“The campus was great. The coaches and facilities. I liked it.”
The Purdue Boilermakers also got an early visit from the point guard.
“Pretty much the same. Good competition. The coaches were friendly and players were friendly.”
