Prospect Update: Ty Anderson (2020)
Northern Iowa is on a tear right now, nabbing commitments from several of Iowa’s top prospects over the course of the last month; North Scott’s versatile, long and athletic 6’5 wing Ty Anderson is the most recent.
Anderson is an early commit for the Panthers, unlike recent 2019 commits Noah Carter, Logan Wolf and Cole Henry, he’s a 2020 guy, and still has his junior and senior seasons ahead of him.
Everything happened quick for the junior wing. Last Tuesday he went on an unofficial visit, the UNI coaching staff offered him them. He wasted no time committing, two days later he announced he’d be a Panther.
Anderson, who just wrapped up his 16U grassroots season with the Iowa Barnstormers, had no other scholarship offers, although he would have likely received several more during his 17U season.
For him and his family, though, they could think of no better fit than Northern Iowa.
“It was just me and family and coaches talked and we all agreed that it was going to be the best fit for me,” said Anderson. “There was no other place that would have that type of fit.”
A tall, slender and rangy prospect, Anderson helped North Scott to the state tournament last season as a sophomore starter while averaging 7.4 points and a team-best 4.8 rebounds per game. He also led the team with 16 blocked shots.
He says the recent success of the UNI program and the success of players that have come through was a big factor in his quick decision.
“They just have great coaching, and past players I know have been successful moving on from college; and they have great players now,” said Anderson. “The campus is really nice, and I just really like the family aspect of it, just like North Scott and Iowa Barnstormers have.”
He’ll join other Iowa Barnstormers products AJ Green, Logan Wolf and Noah Carter as well as James Betz and Cole Henry as in-state guys that will be on the Panthers’ roster from Iowa’s 2018, 2019 and 2020 classes. As of right now, UNI has offers extended to Norwalk’s Bowen Born and Iowa City West’s Even Brauns from Iowa’s 2020 class.
Anderson says it’s nice knowing your college teammates ahead of time.
“Us Iowa guys, we all play the right way, we all work really hard and are tough,” he said. “It’s good to know the people that are going to be on your team and that you kind of have a bond with already.”
