Prospect Spotlight: Karter Kriegel (2021)
In just a few months, the new high school hoops season will begin, and you can expect a slew of sophomores to emerge as top young talents.
Johnston is harboring plenty of that young talent in its program, and 6-foot-1 point guard Karter Kriegel is one of those that could emerge this season.
A pass-first point guard, Kriegel is a guy who is definitely a capable scorer, but his first priority is to get his teammates easy buckets.
“I like to get my teammates involved, and I like to push the ball up the floor and play fast with them, said Kriegel. “That makes me better, it opens the floor for me to score more. But, ya, getting my teammates going is what I love doing.”
With Pure Prep 15U this season, Kriegel was the guy who ran the show. “We played some tough teams and we beat some tough teams, and I definitely got better over the summer,” Kriegel said.
And now, as he heads into his sophomore sophomore season at Johnston, he’s hoping to see some varsity minutes, and he’ll do whatever he can to help the team.
“I was playing the start of the summer (team camps) with the sophomore group, but lately, Coach (Bobby) Sandquist has been talking to me about playing varsity. I’m not sure what my role would be, there’s a lot of guards there in the mix right now,” said Kriegel.
“I would just want to play my role, do what I do best and just help my team succeed.”
Still with lots of time for his recruitment to materialize, you can expect the talented floor general’s interest to heat up next summer. He’s already got a nice start to his recruitment process.
“I heard something from Nebraska-Kearney about coming to their elite camp, and they’ve been really high on me. I’ve also heard from Wayne State in Nebraska. And then Colgate in New York invited me to their elite camp,m” said Kriegel.
“My goal for the next year is to just keep getting better as a guard, with my shooting, ball-handling and stuff like that. And then for recruiting, D1 scholarships is the main goal — maybe get an offer in the next year.”
