Prospect Spotlight: Zach Maynard (2020)
If you like versatile players that can score from all three levels, then you’ll love Zach Maynard.
The Brother Rice guard is absolutely deadly with the ball in his hands, and you can see why he likes watching Klay Thompson, CJ McCollum and Stephen Curry.
Maynard has in the gym range, but if a defender closes out too hard, he is able blow by him and finish around the rim. He is the main focus of most defenses, and that has helped him become a better all-around player. His basketball IQ is very high and he always seems to make the right play.
“I’d say my IQ for the game separates me from others and also that I won’t let anyone outwork me,” said Maynard.
While he is an exceptional player, he knows that he still has things to work on. Heading into the season, Maynard would like to get stronger and faster. With increased strength and speed, Maynard would be even tougher to guard because he could use his speed to set up his pull up jumper and use his strength to finish through contact.
Maynard is ranked as Prep Hoops’ No. 65 overall prospect in the state of Michigan for the class of 2020. He is using the fact that he is somewhat underrated to his advantage. He says that he plays with a chip on his shoulder and he works even harder to make people recognize him.
Maynard’s game hasn’t gone completely unnoticed. Although the recruiting process is just getting started for him, he’s heard from some mid-major programs. One big reason he is getting attention is his dominant AAU season. Maynard was scoring at will this summer and his game will only continue to improve as he gets stronger.
When asked what he’d like college coaches to know about him that they might not be able to see by just watching his film, Maynard said, “my work ethic and leadership on and off the court.”
The 6-foot-2 guard has big goals and dreams in basketball. He’d like to play in college and then go pro after that. Unlike most kids, Maynard is taking the necessary steps to make that dream a reality. He is constantly in the gym working on his game and has a grade point average of 3.95.
He will have to adjust to his new team at Brother Rice, but Maynard looks like he is going to have a breakout junior season.
