Prospect Spotlight: Nick Hansel (2020)
There’s a lot of guys that will enjoy breakout seasons next year, especially in Iowa’s 2020 class. Cedar Rapids Xavier’s 6-foot-4 small forward Nick Hansel is definitely a candidate.
He’s impressed us at PHIA for a year-and-a-half now, ever since the FutureStars Camp in Dubuque in 2017. Now, he’ll get the opportunity to play and make an impact with the Saints’ varsity next season.
A versatile forward, with the ability to play from the perimeter or bang in the paint, Hansel has a lot to offer.
“I feel like I’m pretty good at shooting 3s and mid-range, that opens up the floor so I can drive a lot. And then I can use my length to finish over guards,” said Hansel.
A key figure on one of Iowa’s most intriguing 16U squads, Team Iowa White, Hansel was a do-it-all guy for that squad.
“We just had a lot of chemistry and we got along well,” he said. “We had a lot of people who could shoot and play on the perimeter. We had a lot of guys that could do everything.”
With Xavier next season, Hansel says his role is simple: crash the boards and make shots.
“My role is going to be to rebound and also to shoot a little bit,” said Hansel.
As for recruitment, 16U is a time when that can start up for some guys. For Hansel, it’s been slow so far.
“My recruitment has been a little slow, but I will be going to the Truman State elite camp next month,” he said.
We expect Hansel to be a guy that college coaches around the Midwest know by this time next year.
