Prospect Spotlight: Lane Sparks (2021)
Greensburg has been a stalwart in 3A basketball in Indiana over the past few years. They have had multiple high level basketball players come in and perform well through that span. Greensburg currently has a few players on their roster who have the potential to play college basketball at a high level. One of those such players is Lane Sparks. The 6′ guard is one of the best shooters in the state and isn’t afraid to fire it up at anytime, anywhere on the floor.
Sparks averaged 13.9 points a game last year as he helped lead Greensburg to a 20-6 record and a sectional championship. Sparks had a career high versus South Bend Adams as he scored 26 points on a 10-of-13 shooting performance. Sparks had multiple 20 point performances last year and that doesn’t seem like it will be any different this year.
Sparks is a guy who is able to get his shot off anywhere. He lives in the midrange where he can get hot and make everything. Last year, he didn’t stretch it out to the 3-point line much, but he definitely has the ability to do so. He could add a little bit of strength but for the most past his is very aggressive with how he plays. This allows him to keep defenders off guard and either blow by them, make a jumper, or set up a teammate for an easy shot.
This summer, Sparks ran with UA Grind 2021 where he though that the team played well. Sparks said that early in the summer he played really well and after the high schools got together in June, they came back and really gelled as a team. Sparks worked a ton this summer on his ball handling and creating space for his shot. These two skills that he has been working on could lead to an even bigger scoring output this winter.
Sparks views the thing that separates him from others on the basketball court as his vision. He is aggressive in his game and says that he uses that toughness to not back down from anyone. He also thinks that his scoring ability is something that sets him apart from others on the floor. He is able to make tough shots when his team needs him to and he also mentions his ability to make a jumper in transition.
As Sparks gets better he will start to see schools come in to watch him play. As Sparks keeps scoring and working on the other parts of his game he will be highly valued by schools in the state. A big sophomore year could set him up for a big summer going into his junior year where he would be be sure to get a few looks from some low major schools.
