Prospect Spotlight: Jarin Koehler (2019)
One of Kansas’ best kept basketball secrets, in my opinion, in the 2019 class is at El Dorado High School. Jarin Koehler is a 6’6’’ wing who can play 1-4 on the court as a skilled, high IQ prospect.
Jarin has been working with a skills trainer since sixth grade, refining his ball handling and shooting abilities which allow him to be so versatile on the court.
Mark Washington is the man responsible for infusing the real passion with hoops he has in his life which led to Jarin discontinuing his participation in both football and baseball.
Mark Washington, a former professional player with 13 years of playing experience overseas has been not only a big influence in Jarin’s game but has impacted him off the court as well.
In discussing Jarin with Mark Washington, he not only thinks he is underrated in the state but the entire Midwest stating that he is “One of the most skilled players at his size that the state of Kansas has seen and is as capable and coachable of a player as a coach could wish to have.”
If you’re someone who is plugged into grassroots basketball and nothing else, you may not have heard the name before.
Last summer Jarin suffered an ankle injury that sidelined him for the summer and this summer started the year with a team that ended up dissolving and joined the River City Elite team about midway through the summer.
Jarin leverages his size for a guard, which allows him to guard multiple positions on the defensive end and inevitably make plays on offense that others at his size may not be able to make due to skill level.
Seeing Jarin multiple times, he definitely showed that he can shoot the ball and plays off of his shot. Once he gets that going, he can drive to the basket and sees the floor well, generally making very sound decisions.
Jarin’s focus for this year? It’s simple, he says, stay in attack mode and be the leader that his team at El Dorado needs to win more than eight games this upcoming year.
At the next level, Jarin is looking for a school that will let him play multiple positions next year and obtain a quality education, potentially pursuing a degree in business or a subject matter related to the human body.
With an ACT score of 21 and a GPA sitting at 4.0, he is eligible for any level of basketball.
Jarin is seeing interest from a variety of levels right now as virtually all of the junior colleges in Kansas have reached out along with Newman, Drury, Northern Colorado, and Eastern Washington.
Jarin has the potential to have a breakout senior season and is definitely one to keep your eye on entering the 2018-2019 high school season.
